Best Chinese Restaurant In Dungun, Terengganu - Restoran Lian Fong Yuen

Updated on October 27, 2011

If you are staying in Tanjong Jara resort, Dungun in Terengganu, Malaysia and are looking for a good place to eat for dinner, I would strongly recommend this Chinese Restaurant called Lian Fong Yuen, located in Lim Teck Wan Road in Kuala Dungun China Town. Situated just a few minutes’ drive from the resort, the non-air conditioned restaurant do not come with extensive interior decoration or fancy set up. However, in a rural small town such as Dungun, that is the best the town can offer if you are looking for Chinese food and you do not wish to spend lavishly at resort hotel restaurants. They offer really tasty Chinese food ranging from fish, crab, prawn, chicken to pork (from wild boar) at a very reasonable price. And you get beer there too !

To get to the restaurant, see the google map below. It is located at the mouth of Dungun river (in Malay language, we say, "Kuala Dungun"). If you are coming from the direction of Tanjong Jara Resort towards Dungun town, after crossing the bridge on the Dungun River, immediately turn left to a commercial area. The restaurant is located in the China Town further down this road, towards the direction of the river mouth.

If you can read Chinese characters, below is the snapshot of the restaurant menu.

The menu boasts a good variety of cooking for sek-pan fish, chicken, prawn, crabs, beef, pork, wild pork, taufu, spare ribs, and a few variety of vegetables.

The steamed Sek-Pan Fish was so fresh and tasty. See photo below.

This bitter gourd or bitter melon omelete was quite tasty if you are a bitter gourd eater. It was actually my first time tasting this bitter gourd recipe. I thought it was quite unique and creative. However, the bitter gourd was a bit hard. If I am the cook, I would boil it for a few minutes before frying it with beaten egg.

The deep batter fried squid was really crispy and fragrant. It will tempt you to have more. It went well with steamed rice.

These wild pork curry was so tender and juicy. It was not so spicy unless you asked the cook to increase the spices.

The fried squid and the curry wild pork would go perfectly well with a few glasses of beer if you are a drinker.  They serve all the common beer available in Malaysia such as Carlsberg, Tiger, Heineken beer and so on.

The Price is Reasonable

We also had a plate of garlic fried pak-choy or green vegetable. We had all the five dishes above with 4 plates of steamed rice. We also ordered a bottle of 640ml Calsberg (RM14.00), a can of 100plus and a pot of Chinese tea. All that came with a total bill of RM75 for five persons. We thought it was quite cheap for Kuala Lumpur standard.

We went to the same restaurant again on the following night for dinner. We asked for bigger Sek-pan steamed fish and larger plate of fried squid, and instead of curry wild pork, we had kong-po chicken. We had Heineken beer (RM14.50) too, and the total came up to RM112.

We still thought the price was reasonable.

Family Restaurant

The restaurant is run by a couple, husband and wife. They are really simple and friendly people. The husband is the cook while the wife takes the order from the customers. Their children have grown up and are working in the city.

Restaurant Tien Tien Lai

Located on the same road, there used to be another Chinese restaurant called Tien Tien Lai. Unfortunately, by the time I visited this town in March 2011, it has closed down quite a while ago. It used to be quite a reputable Chinese restaurant around in Dungun years ago.

You made me homesick with pictures of foods I'm familiar with. I love bittergourd and my mother used to fry bittergourd with eggs too. Thanks for sharing.
