5 Egg Substitutes For Vegans
Lets get one thing straight...I love cooking, it’s my passion and as someone who cooks for both a hardcore vegan and a non-vegan relative, I can tell you that I know a little something,something when it comes to substitution. I always challnege myself to make a non-vegan recipe into a vegan friendly one, one of the most challenging substitutes for me are the eggs! Fortunatly,through the years, I have found a few substitutes for them and which ones work best for whatever you are trying to make.
1.) Flax Seed
Alright, this is probably my go-to, I love it because it doesn’t change the flavor of your meal like the overripe banana & fruit/veggie purée. To use this substituion, make sure the flax seed is GROUND(meaning powder). Take 1 Tbsp of ground flax seed and 3 Tbsp of warm water and stir for about 3-5 minutes to substitute 1 egg. This subsitutiton works with any recipe in my opinion.
2.) Vegan Yogurt
This is another great one. It only takes 1/4 cup of vegan yogurt to substitute one egg. This substitute works very well with anything as long as you get plaim yogurt.
3.) Silken Tofu
We all know that tofu can be flavored to mimic anything and I mean anything, it can also subtitute as an egg! All it take is 1/4 cup of silken tofu to substitute one egg.
4.) Override Banana
This is defiantly my least favorite egg substitution because I hate bananas (yes, I know it’s weird) and I feel as though banana really over powers a lot of recipes. I’ve tried to only add a little but no luck, it still had that terrible banana taste but if you love bananas or feel a banana flavor would enhance your dish then by all means try this one, it works very well but I’m my opinion, the banana overpowers. All you need isn’t one overrippened banana to substitute one egg.
5.) Fruit or Veggie Purée
Now this is one substitute that I have not tried but I have heard works well. Depending on what flavor you use, I totally feel like this would make a recipe even better with all the extra flavor. All you need is 1/4 cu of fruit or veggie purée to substitute one egg.
