The Hotwings Legend, One of Them

a Buffalo wing, in the cuisine of the U.S.A. is an unbreaded chicken wing section (flat or drumette) that is generally deep-fried then coated or dipped in a sauce consisting of a vinegar-based cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter prior to serving. The Buffalo wing was invented in 1964 at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York by Teressa Bellissimo. They are traditionally served hot, along with celery sticks and carrot sticks with blue cheese dressing for dipping.

Then Came the Challenger:

Robert Glenn Baumhower (born August 4, 1955) is a restaurateur and a former American football player who played college football for the University of Alabama under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1973 to 1976 and professional football for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL) under coach Don Shula. Baumhower had his hotwing(s), naturally, in "T-Town" AKA/Tuscaloosa, Ala., home of the Crimson Tide, the University of Al.

Seriously. This is NOT a knock on Teressa Bellissimo, the woman who says that it was her restaurant was first to serve hotwings to her many customers. And to be fair, Bob Baumhower's faith was as big as his hulking body to open Wings Sports Grill in Tuscaloosa and I can tell you by first-hand experience, I have had the joy of dining with Wings,Tuscaloosa, Ala., more than four times, and each time the service and hotwings got better and better.

This is really too easy for me to say that about Wings in Tuscaloosa since I have never made the trip to New York to meet Teressa Bellissimo in her Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York provided that she is there, so I will leave my opinions about Baumhower's "Wings Connection" alone as to not over-sell Bellissimo's Anchor Bar in New York. Fair is fair, I have to think.

The Personal Hotwings Connection:

belongs to me. Although this may sound greedy, it is not. I have to give credit where credit is due. Two of my very best friends in Hamilton, Ala., (our hometown) got me hooked in eating hotwings. But this venture was more an act of proving to myself and my very best friends, Chad Clark, and Shane Nowlin, that I could eat hotwings with the best of them. But the day came when Chad came over to our home along with Lynn Holloway and his wife, Paula, along with Pam, my wife and daughter, Angie. These girls had pan after pan of hotwings and they not only dipped each hotwing with hot sauce, they lathered each hotwing with sauce so hot that they cried while the sauce was being applied.

I knew that something confident was happening to me when Chad took a bottle of Nuclear Hot Sauce, that he secured from Wings Sports Grille and I witnessed Chad as he poured the great-smelling sauce onto my wings. I almost cried, but not because the sauce was burning my eyes. But due to me being so happy at this event.

Now. I want you to know that there is a big difference in the term, "hot," when it pertains to chicken wings. Wing veterans, Clark and Nowlin, could sit down and eat a pound of "Pure Hot Heat" and never break a sweat. On the other hand, I grabbed a hotwings sauce recipe for my wife, Pam, to make some hot sauce for me to eat--what a stupid macho male thing to do. But I was excited about eating hotwings because in my life I had learned something. I felt as if I could take on the world. All because of my love for hotwings.

There is this hotwing sauce named, Frank's Insanity, and this sauce is so hot that the legal heat measurement is set on each bottle. When Chad and Shane were into Frank's that they could only use one or two drops into some base sauce such as Nuclear or Frank's Hot Sauce, but only for wings you find in the grocery store. Franks Insanity is so hot that I have watched people try this stuff without eating chips or drinking milk and these people almost fainted.

I do not think that I will have to tell you about Mild, Somewhat Mild or Hot and Super-Hot Wing Sauce. I do not mean to sound like a carnival barker, but there is more to see and enjoy about hotwings than meets the eye. And God help you if should accidentally drop one drop of any hot sauce in your eye.S

These are becoming more popular on hotel menus in the UK, often as a starter with a dip.

I would love to eat at both! I wonder where the best wings near me are? As far as chains there is a wingstop 2 miles away, buffalo wild wings 6 miles away, and the buffalo wild rings both over 20. Now that i think about almost every restaurant now sells wings, lol. Good read Ken.
