Bugs and Catsup: A Boy Scout Recipe
Grandpa's Sloppy Joes
When I was a child, there was nothing better than my Dad's sloppy joes. I always asked him why they tasted so good and he would reply, "I make them with love." Later on, when I had kids of my own, he jokingly told my son, "We are having bugs and catsup for supper," and the name stuck with my kids. Everyone loves my dad's sloppy joes, and the recipe is so simple it's almost funny.
All you need is 1 lb of ground beef, a bottle of ketchup, and a little mustard.
Cook the ground beef til its brown. Do not, I repeat do not, drain the grease. Add ketchup until it covers all the ground beef. Put about a teaspoon of mustard in, cook a few more minutes. Brown your hamburger buns in the oven.Make sure you are cooking it with love. Serve. You can also add some onion salt or brown sugar.
I told you it was simple. My dad learned this while going on a boy scout trip to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan.
- 1 lb ground beef
- until it covers the ground beef ketchup
- about 1 tbsp mustard
- add to taste onion salt, optional
- 2 tbsp brown sugar, optional
