Cuisine: Mexican....ish

Not trusting that friend's judgement on food anymore!

A friend of mine told me Carreta's Grill was one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city, so I decided to go there and see if she was right. The food seemed a little pricey and the menu slightly confusing. Unlike most restaurants, they had the name of the dish to the let of the description instead of over it. While waiting 30 minutes for our drinks, we planned out our entire meal.

For appetizer, we tried the Grilled Chicken Nachos. The chips were topped with beans, sour cream, pickled jalapenos, Pico de Gallo, and chicken. It was the typical nachos, better than Taco Bell but, Applebee's could make the same thing. The entree arrived about four minutes after our appetizer got to the table. Great timing if I may say so my self, I do love deciding on which one I want to get cold first.

I played it safe and ordered the chicken fajitas while my friend tried the shredded beef chimichanga. The chicken was slightly over seasoned and extremely over-cooked. The guacamole had a lovely brown tint to it, like it had been sitting out too long. The chimichanga was supposed to be shredded beef and ended tasting like shredded chicken. I am not sure whether the server or the kitchen ordered or prepared the wrong dish but I can tell you it was not very pleasing. The rice tasted like it was Spanish Rice-a-Roni, and the beans were obviously canned. After not finishing our entrees of unimpressive food we decided it was in our best interest to skip dessert and get the check.

The food was not so bad, but the service needs serious improvement. Although I would say that trying the food at Carreta's is not a bad idea, I do think that expecting decent atmosphere and service would be aiming to high. Overall, food wasn't horrible, service should definitely be better for the price you're paying.
