Charmglow gas grill parts have evolved dramatically over the past thirty years.
Charmglow gas grill parts have evolved dramatically over the past thirty years.

Charmglow original quality

Charmglow Grills is a name that most people are familiar with. Models that were produced between 1960 and 1980 could very well still be in use today. If you wanted high quality grill parts and great construction, Charmglow would turn your neighbors green with envy.

Beatrice Foods Company was one of the first manufacturers to purchase Charmglow Grills during the early1980s. After a string of other owners they ended up with Sunbeam. It seemed that every company that touched the Charmglow grill models made some type of changes but all in all the line of grills remained reliable, sustainable and popular.

Newer models

Today, Charmglow Grills offers magnificent looking models such as the Charmglow 3, 4 and 5 Burner, the Charmglow Firepit, the Charmglow Gourmet, the Charmglow Island and the Charmglow Porcelain. Shiny and new, these grills will draw your attention in any Home Depot store. There are models that act as an oven, portable models and those featuring large work areas.

Brinkmann (The Home Depot) manufactures the Charmglow Grills that are sold today at Home Depot.  One of the most charming models is the Charmglow Ducane 3 burner stainless steel grill. 680 inches of cooking space, an EvenFlame system and a side burner.

Grill parts quality

Complaints began surfacing when in 2004, the name Charmglow, was sold again to Home Depot and one of the manufacturers was Nexgrill Industries. In September of 2005, there was a huge recall of 86,000 stainless steel gas grill model 720-0036-HD-05 because the hose that connected the propane tank to the manifold was too close to the firebox, causing damage to the hose and subsequently, causing it to leak gas. All of these units were sold through Home Depot from November 2004 through June 2005 for around $350.00.

Charmglow Grills are very attractive and inexpensive. Coupled with the good older reputation of Charmglow Grills, Home Depot certainly thought that they had a winner. But with a good name comes a standard to uphold. Unfortunately, the next four years held a lot of disappointment for customers and Home Depot alike.

Most of the complaints that have been recorded are the poor quality of workmanship that seems to have taken over the Charmglow name. One of the most noted imperfections are the burners. Failing to work in less than a year, rusting through beyond use or corroding to worn out pipes. The grade of stainless steel is less than adequate for a piece of outdoor equipment. Also mentioned were welds that broke loose, rusting and flames that shot out of unusual places. Complaints include casters that collapse, dangerous loss of propane and totally blowing up.

Nexgrill Industries and Brinkmann are both suppliers of replacement parts that can be purchased to totally rebuild your Charmglow Grill and many times the unit is still under warranty, backed by Home Depot. Unfortunately, the customer is responsible for the shipping fees and it is not often easy to contact a service representative. When contact finally is made a $30. burner under warranty could cost $25. in shipping. Also, the burner is made the same as the one that rusted to pieces in three months. You have to be sure that the body (which is not stainless steel, only the exterior), will hold together long enough to warrant new parts. When that is the case, there are other Charmglow grill parts technicians selling better quality replacement parts for the Charmglow and Brinkmann barbecues.

Shopping for a gas bbq grill

When you decide to shop for the perfect outdoor grill that you expect to last for at least ten years, don't let the brilliance of stainless steel fool you. There are different grades of stainless steel plus you need to take a look inside and underneath of the model to see what other materials are used. Knobs can also be misleading if they are of thin plastic that cannot take the heat. Every model will have a manual that shares the type of parts used. Go home and do your homework in looking up the manufacturers of these parts.

Built in bbq grill island accessories

Although lately Charmglow and Brinkmann have been selling grill island accessories and we built a lot of outdoor kitchen, we use products with more selections.

Shop at other stores that offer compatible models and compare the differences. A heavy model as opposed to a model weighing very little should indicate to you that the quality could not be as good. Parts are going to wear out over time but you need a sturdy body that can withstand years of use. It is better to settle for a smaller model that costs more than a large model that is not dependable in a year.

A warranty is only as good as what is warranted so be sure that everything is covered. Necessary parts, shipping and service should not be your responsibility. Sometimes purchasing a grill that costs under $1000 is not as great as it seems. Especially when it is broken. Charmglow Grills are an excellent example of this.

It is tragic because the brand Charmglow has been owned by good quality manufacturers through its history. Unfortunately once Nexgrill started making the barbeque the quality dropped fast. Home Depot sued for a contract violation and ended up owning the brand and they now just buy anything over seas and put the Charmglow brand on it. Not to come across as completely mercantile but if you need replacement parts that Are Not made by Charmglow at:

The Charmglow parts my service technicians use are not made by Charmglow -- the quality of the charmglow replacement grill parts are much better than the ones that came with the barbecue.

      Replace Burners on Charmglow 720-0036-HD-05.

This turned out to be much easier than I expected.

      1. Disconnect the gas line to the "side burner".

      2. Remove the two "side shelves", each of which is held on by 4 large phillips screws.

      3. Remove the "control panel" that is held on by two smaller phillips screws at each side of the "control panel".

      4. Remove the "front baffle" located directly behind the "control panel that is held on by 4 phillips screws.

      5. Lift off the "cooking grills" and the "flame tamers" (the plates over the burners) so that you can see the burners.

      6. Now you can slide each of the burners forward and then left them out of the grill.

Replace everything in the reverse order.

Even Ducane and many Webers are made overseas now. Weber watches the quality closely but in addition to the quality control problems is the moral issue of supporting american jobs when we choose what we buy. I own a Solaire but the price range is x10 of a Charmglow. I like the Broil-King barbeques a lot and they are still made completely in america. Very similar to a weber but the burners are more effective, the ignition assembly more reliable, overall construction warrantied for life and the price is less with better features.

Also bought a 720-0036-HD-05. All the burners are rusted out. Seems like a waste of money to buy new burners. I already avoid Home Depot, but most places sell the same Chinese crap. I avoid Chinese stuff if at all possible. I will pay 2x to not buy Chinese, ESPECIALLY IF IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH FOOD. I would never buy a Chinese-made frying pan. Look the jewelry they make in China has CADMIUM in it. That's poisonous and known to cause cancer. They banned lead and switched to something worse. They said 5 cents per ton so they are willing to do it. Same country that put anti-freeze in toothpaste for Panama and melamine in dog food and even melamine in their domestic milk supply (killed 6 babies and made thousands sick). Home Depot is China Depot. Who makes grills in the USA or Canada or Australia???/
