Classic Cookout Side Dishes

Updated on April 14, 2011

It's August.  School starts soon.  Labor Day is almost upon us.  Football preseason has begun.  Seems like summer is almost over, but there is still at least one more month of good cookout weather for most of the country and for many parts, there are still two, three or four months of good weather for weekend cookouts.

Hot dogs and hamburgers, ribs and steaks, the delectable scent of grilled meat wafting through the neighborhood.  All are hallmarks of a successful cookout.  But what is steak without corn, brats without macaroni salad, burgers without watermelon?  The grilled meat may draw everyone to the cookout, but it's the side dishes that make the meal.

I found this recipe on pterniest last spring. I have made it several times. We LOVE it. It is delicious with grilled chicken breast, fish, and flank steak!! We have made it for guests and everyone always raves about it. Even my picky 3 and 6 yr olds clean their plates.

I made this for a BBQ yesterday a rammocendetion by a co-worker; and it was a hit. Everyone asked for the recipe. My husband thought it would be better with more cilantro and more pepper (he loves spicy food). And I did use half brown sugar and half regular sugar. Simply delicious! Oh, I served it with scoop corn chips!! h
