There are different versions of the coffee cake. Most of these versions don't include coffee but a few do. The reason they named it the coffee cake is because it was a simple unfrosted cake that was eaten with coffee. Coffee cake is served at informal affairs while fancy cakes are for formal affairs.

Did you know that there is a National Coffee Cake Day which is on April 7th? While looking for some interesting things about coffee cake, this is one tidbit that I came across.
It is thought that the Danish was the first to come up with the coffee cake.
Coffee cake was first enjoyed with coffee by the Europeans in the 17th century.
The whole in the middle of the coffee cake became popular in the 1950's with the invention of the bundt pan.
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup sour cream or 1 cup of milk and 1 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- Mix together in a bowl, all the ingredients. Grease a tube pan. Pour half of the batter into the tube pan. Then sprinkle half of the toppings. Add the rest of the batter and then add the rest of the topping. Bake for 45 minutes in a 350-degree oven.

What is interesting is that my mother has made this coffee cake so many times that I had to make it myself. While it did come out great, it didn't taste like my mom's. But my parents and I loved it. The coffee cake was gone in two days.
