Frying Plantains In Corn Oil, And Other Food Ideas
Deep frying foods are not something that to do every day, but once and awhile fried food can be a treat. Corn oil is a vegetable oil that can be used in many dishes asking for vegetable oil. People who are allergic to certain kinds of vegetable oils such as peanut oil may prefer to use corn oil as a substitute. Fried foods are not something you should eat every day, but once in a while fried foods are fun to eat. Frying plantains in corn oil with chopped up onions also makes for a savory dish, which is not that all different from potatoes in my opinion. Also, you can use corn oil to fry corn tortillas strips, which is a cheap way to make your own corn chips. If you have leftover corn oil, you can even drizzle this in homemade salsa to add zest, or use extra corn oil to fry corn tortilla strips for a simple desert.
Frying Plantains in Corn Oil with Onions
Pull the plantains when still green and dice into small pieces as you would with potatoes.
Chop up a quarter on an onion to go with three chopped up plantains. Frying three plantains at a time makes it easier to manage the cooking process, and creates a serving for about two people. Fry more or less chopped plantain according to how many people will be eating at your house. Season the pan with a little bit of garlic salt as you are frying.
Drain the fried plantain on a plate layered with paper towels.
Serve the plantain with ketchup or tomatillo salsa.
Frying Tuna Patties in Corn Oil
Mix together the tuna patties by opening a can of tuna putting it in a mixing bowl. Crumble in four or five saltine crackers and add an egg to the mixture. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
Form patties out of the tuna mixture.
Fry two patties at a time in a frying pan filled with about an inch of corn oil.
Drain the tuna patties on a plate layered with paper towels.
Enjoy a tuna patty on a slice of whole wheat bread, or by itself. The tuna patty also tastes delicious in a whole wheat pita pocket with a slice of tomato and some lettuce.
Homemade Corn Chips Fried in Corn Oil
Use the pizza wheel to divide the corn tortillas into strips that are 4 by 2 inches.
Pour two inches of corn oil in the frying pan.
Fry the corn tortilla strips on a medium heat until these are crispy.
Use a spatula or a slotted spoon to stir the tortilla strips so these do not stick together.
Place the fried corn chips on a plate covered with paper towels, which will absorb the excess corn oil.
Keep the corn tortillas whole and fry these to make black bean tostadas.
Homemade Salsa with a Drizzling of Corn Oil
Chop up three large tomatoes and half an onion to mix together in a large bowl.
Cut up cilantro and small fresh chilies, and add as many as desired to your salsa mixture.
Add half a cup of canned tomato sauce to your salsa mixture and stir in thoroughly. Mix in less canned tomato sauce if you prefer a chunkier salsa.
Drizzle a tablespoon of corn oil in the salsa mixture and stir all the ingredients together.
Serve the salsa with your homemade corn chips.
Fried Corn Tortilla Strips for Dessert
Cut up and fry the corn tortilla strips as you did when making the corn chips.
Allow these to dry thoroughly on a plate covered with paper towels, which will absorb the excess corn oil.
Drizzle maple syrup on the fried tortilla strips and sprinkle on powdered sugar to enjoy this messy, but delectably simple desert.
Corn Oil Suggestions:
- If you want to cut down on the fat of frying the tortilla strips, you can brush on a bit of corn oil with a pastry brush and bake these on a nonstick pizza pan.
- Avoid creating a salty tortilla strip desert by frying these in a separate pan with fresh corn oil.
- People with corn allergies may need to avoid the consumption of foods made with corn oil.
