In my free time, I enjoy taking day trips and looking for new things to write about.

corned beef hash is basically chopped beef and potatoes (hash browns)

Introduction

Some of you may not have heard of corned beef hash, or beef hash etc.

Basically, it is finely chopped meat, mixed with diced potatoes. You have your beef element, and then your hash browns.

You could probably use a variety of meats if you were to make your own: chicken, sausage, ham, steak, etc.

When purchasing it in can though, if you have never tried it, you might be initially taken aback because it seems to have the consistency, and slight aroma, of pet food. When cooked though, it is quite good and makes a filling meal.

Some people like a side of egg or toast to go with it. It makes a quick fix breakfast and you don't have to concern yourself with cooking the meat and browning the potatoes alone.

The following are a few samples of the product you can probably find at your local store. Individual tastes may vary however and these are just my own personal opinions.

Great Value (Walmart)

Price: $2.99 - 3.99

Walmart brand is sometimes not; it's hard to tell.

With their hash though, they come off pretty good. The meat is nicely chopped and you get a pretty generous mix of finely diced potato.

It has a nice taste and isn't as salty as some of the other brands like Hormel. I cook mine until it's almost crisp.

It is also nice because it breaks apart nicely when coming out of the can which makes it easy to deal with when cooking.

As I said it isn't as salty as some of the other brands, but it is also a little more bland because of that. It still tastes good, but lacks a little bit of that umph that I like.

For the price though, it is probably one of the better ones out there.

Armour

Price: $1.99 -$2.99

This is one of the better priced examples out there and probably has the least attractive packaging. The photograph on the can looks old and grainy and made me wonder how long it had been sitting on the shelf.

However, it cooked up easily and the larger chunks of potato were certainly a plus. The flavor was delicious and I have to be honest when I let you know that this food probably isn't at the top as far as healthy eating is concerned. High in sodium and carbs and you can taste it.

With a side of egg and an English muffin or bagel, this would be a hearty breakfast. A can could probably feed a few people.

Hormel

Hormel

$3.99 - $4.99

One of the better known name brands out there, Hormel makes some good hash. Many of the off brands are fairly comparable, but Hormel's is pretty good.

There are also variations of this product, a lower sodium, etc. Produced under the brand, Mary Kitchen, they manage to bring a home cooked ambiance to their food. What I mean by that- I don't exactly know, but it has a slightly better taste, and is probably worth the extra dollar you will pay for it.

Prices however vary from location and you may be able to find a good deal on this item.

More flavorful and substantial than the other brands, even though the potato slices are small, it will fill you up and leave you satisfied.

Signature Kitchens (Safeway)

Price: $3.99 - $4.99

One of the more expensive ones out there, but probably much better than most. Signature Kitchens has nice chunks of potato and a generous helping of lean, corned beef. This one is much less greasier than the other ones in the survey.

In addition, there is no overly salty taste. The breakfast is filling and hearty and with a side of egg and bread make a great meal.

This would probably be my favorite pick of those out there and if you have not tried corned beef hash before, start with this one.

Some Final Words

If you haven't tried corned beef hash previously, you might be a little surprised when you prepare it for the first time.

The contents, when in the can, have the appearance - and sometimes - aroma of pet food. Don't let that dissuade you however from enjoying a delicious and complete meal. You have your meat and your potato all mixed together and if cooked right, it is delicious.

I like mine cooked a little longer, so that it is almost crisp. I recommend this too because it definitely changes the appearance of the product.

Once cooked you will certainly find it enjoyable.

The one or two downsides about this meal is that the sodium content is rather high and the carbohydrate factor isn't the best if you are watching your diet.

If you have't tried corned beef hash, I recommend giving it a try. There are many out there, but I have reviewed a sample of four.

This is an honest and helpful review. I don’t eat beef but I was interested in how you reviewed the products. I liked your honesty about how it smells.
