Delicious Toppings for Pancakes
It's pretty typical to top your pancakes with butter and/or syrup, but there are a lot of other alternatives out there to add flavor to this traditional breakfast staple.
Although I enjoy syrup myself, I find that I can't eat too much of it as it becomes too sweet for me.
In addition, if you have young kids around, syrup can tend to be pretty sticky and messy and getting it out of their hair is no fun.
Having kids, I enjoy looking for a variety of different toppings to add their pancakes, not to mention that I like the variety as well.
From healthy to decadent, I'll share with you some ideas to spruce up your breakfast meal. If you have ideas of your own, please feel free to share them in the comments section at the bottom.
Pancakes and Fruit
Healthy Toppings for Pancakes
If you want to enjoy some pancakes, but go a healthier route, I suggest topping them with some fresh fruit. Slice up some bananas or strawberries.
Add some fresh blueberries or raspberries. Should you be using sliced fruit and are making a stack of pancakes, you can place some between each pancake.
Prefer something smoother? You can spread some of your favorite fruit yogurt on top. In my home it happens to be strawberry that is favored, followed by blueberry.
Pancakes and Ice Cream
Now, if you just want to eat pancakes for the pure pleasure of doing so, there are many delightful toppings to choose from. How about some ice cream and chocolate syrup? If you like custard, try adding some on.
Of course whipped cream is a delight as is powdered sugar. You could also add some cinnamon and sugar or spread your favorite jam or jelly.
Try some honey or peanut butter. Now, if you're an adult, you might like to try a chocolate liqueur or some raspberry peach Grand Marnier.
Another idea is to top your pancakes with another breakfast food such as scrambled eggs or sausage.

When serving kids, try adding some applesauce on top. It can either be regular or flavored such as cinnamon or strawberry. Another consideration is some canned fruit cocktail. If going the canned fruit route, you could also try pears or peaches.
My youngest is a big fan of Nutella, which is a hazelnut chocolate spread. You can guess what one of her favorite things is to spread on pancakes.
If you have toddlers, you could use some fruit baby food. This would also make the pancakes more nutritious.
Besides tasting good, you can also make the pancakes look fun such as in the photo above.
Mickey Mouse Pancakes
You can create your own Mickey Mouse pancakes just as they do in Walt Disney World. Besides cute pancakes, you can cook eggs in them as well.
Before continuing with more topping ideas, I thought you might enjoy some interesting facts about flap jacks.
I thought it would be interesting to see when and where pancakes originated. It seems they first came about in ancient times, although they were different than we eat them today.
Finding where they originated has been more of a challenge. Some credit the Romans, while others credit the Greeks. Even additional countries have been credited for their origins so at least for the moment, it's not positive where the first pancakes came from.
Most likely you're familiar with Aunt Jemima, but did you know there was a real person behind her? Her name was Nancy Green and she was a former slave who portrayed Aunt Jemima. She made her debut at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois in 1893.
Have you heard of Pancake Day? Yes, it's a real holiday. You might know it by its other name which is Shrove Tuesday and it takes place the day before Ash Wednesday.
Where Aunt Jemima was "born."
Looking to try something different? The pancake above is made with tomato, asparagus, cheese and peppers on top. If you like the idea of something with a kick, try some salsa.
Some people enjoy a flavored cream cheese spread. Kraft has several flavors that would work including pineapple, blueberry and honey nut.
Really almost anything can go if it's a food you enjoy. Some people like to add shaved nuts and i know one person who loves to add chili on top of his pancakes. Think of foods you really enjoy and give them a try.
If you like to use butter, but want something a little more flavorful, you might opt for a flavored butter. There are endless possibilities here. It's really a matter of mixing butter with something else that you like.
Let's say, for example, you like the flavor of maple. Take 3/4 of a stick of butter, (softened,) and mix it with 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Once completely mixed, let it harden in the refrigerator and you now will have maple butter.
Now, you may be wondering why should you make maple butter if you can just put a dab of butter and pour some syrup over your pancakes. Here's the reason. Some people enjoy how the butter slowly melts, whereas with syrup, it goes all over the plate. Using maple butter wil have the same melting effect as regular butter does.
If you like this idea, but have a different favorite syrup, simply substitute the maple syrup with it.
Additional flavors of butter to consider include cinnamon, chocolate and your favorite nuts.
Have you ever used flavored butter on your pancakes?
If you like to make pancakes, but hate the mess, then I suggest a batter dispenser. This is easy to use and will make cooking pancakes much easier and cleaner. It's particularly helpful if you have kids who want to help you cook.
Krusteaz Pancake Mix
Easy Pancake Mix
I admit it. I don't make pancakes from scratch too often. I usually use a mix. If you have considered using one, the one I really like is Krusteaz.
It's very easy to make. Just follow the directions on the box. You will need to add milk, egg(s) and oil.
The amount you need is determined by how many pancakes you plan to make. Just follow the instructions on the box.
Want things ever simpler? They also make a mix where all you need to do is to add water. It doesn't get much easier than that.
I visited their website while I was writing this and found a very good tip I would like to pass on to you. If you don't have a pancake dispenser, use an ice cream scoop to drop your batter onto the grill. It makes just the right size of pancakes!

In case you haven't heard this term, flap jacks is another name for pancakes. No matter what you call them, this is a great tasting breakfast food. Of course some people, myself included, have been known to serve them for dinner. After all, there are quite good and filling.
I hope you were able to find some toppings that you like I'm always experimenting with new ones. Remember, too, that some of these toppings can be combined with others. If you are using any kind of fruit, you can add whipped cream or Cool Whip.
In fact, you can use either one of these as a stand alone topping or perhaps add some kind of candy sprinkles to them. My personal favorite is powdered sugar with a small scoop of ice cream.
Now, it's your turn. If you have a favorite topping, please tell me about it. I love trying out new ideas. You can tell me in the comment box below.
