Easy Homemade Granola
Homemade Granola Recipe
This is a recipe for homemade granola I have developed and modified since I was married over seven years ago. It is a work in progress. My goal was to create a healthy, frugal breakfast or snack cereal that still had enough crunch and sweetness to compare to the store varieties. I also found other recipes to be time consuming, so I wanted a method that could be mixed and baked quickly, without a lot of steps.
3 cups oats
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brown sugar (or natural, organic or raw) (this can be omitted or reduced if a low sugar cereal is preferred)
1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (optional)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup honey
small amount of butter to grease pan (butter tastes a lot better than shortening or oil and really enhances the flavor)
Preheat oven to 275 degrees Farenheit. Mix all ingredients well, then spread evenly onto a large, buttered baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, stir, then bake an additional 12-15 minutes or until browned. Remove from oven, stir and cool completely before storing in airtight jar or container.
That's it! My six year old daughter can mix this up on her own. We try to bake all of our bread and cereal for the week on Mondays, and so we usually double this recipe. But it is often eaten up well before the week's end!
