I live in Houston, and I have worked as a nurse. My interests include art, traveling, reading, gardening, cooking, and our wonderful pets.

Memorial Villages Farmers Market

If searching on the Internet for farmers market Houston, there are many choices in our metropolitan area. The Memorial Villages Farmers Market that my husband and I visited today is our favorite one to date.

Part of that was due to the weather. It just could not have been better! It was sunny and bright but yet only in the 70s as far as temperature. Low humidity also added to the enjoyment.

The Setting

A portion of the back part of the parking lot at the First Congregational Church is where the tented displays of garden produce, food, and other offerings are on display. To the front of this area are grassy areas and tall trees, making this such a beautiful site.

In the grassy areas are some permanent benches and some tables with seats. A small bike rack accommodates those coming to that location via bicycles.

Entertainment

A small stage was the setting where a local young man by the name of Kyle Comer, who lives in the area, was playing the guitar today.

The day could just have not been any better! It was perfect for browsing among the different offerings on site. We sampled some of the food items. We took the time to relax on one of those benches with a steaming cup of coffee while listening to the mellow sounds of the guitar.

The other farmer’s markets that we have thus far attended were in the heat of our sizzling Houston summers. While we enjoyed making our purchases and supporting local businesses, we were happy to climb back into our air-conditioned car and cool off while driving back home.

Today we probably would have stayed even longer lingering on that bench had the guitarist continued playing. He left at 11 AM…so the early birds were rewarded by going to this farmers market when it opened if wishing to hear live music.

Delicious Cheese Offerings

Our original intent was to scout out the fresh vegetables. We then saw the cheese display of Brazos Valley Cheese, where this friendly young man was handing out samples of all of his cheeses. To say that they were delicious is an understatement! Several of them are award-winning in wide-ranging contests from Montreal, Canada to Seattle, Washington.

It is not too surprising after listening to this young man and also checking out their website. Their grass-fed free-ranging cows are free of administered antibiotics and growth hormones. Raw cow’s milk is utilized in their cheesemaking. This delicious cheese is free of artificial colors and flavor enhancers, as well as preservatives. The cheeses are also aged in an underground cave.

Our predominant purchases came from this one booth today at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market, as you can see from my photo.

We did purchase a beautiful eggplant as well as another jar of green salsa from PAIN TRAIN GREEN-GO SALSA company. We were first introduced to the salsa at the Farmers Market on Grand Parkway in Katy, Texas.

2nd Cup Coffee

We would have ordered a breakfast taco at one of the booths. Sadly for us, they had already sold out of them for the day. Next to them was a booth selling coffee. All of the proceeds for sales of that coffee go to help fund the agencies fighting against human trafficking. It is called 2nd Cup Coffee, and they have other locations as well as in this farmers market Houston.

So we felt extra-good sipping on our morning cup of java while listening to the beautiful guitar music.

Will we be returning to this farmers market again? Absolutely! There are still some others we wish to check out, but this one is a winner. There are approximately 40 vendors at this Memorial Villages Farmers Market. Check out their website to learn more.

      Hello Chitrangada,

Do you not have farmer's markets in your area? Perhaps they call it something different? Glad you liked the appearance of this one.

      Hi FlourishAnyway,

The advantage of purchasing things from farmer's markets is that you are helping your local economy. Also, in the case of vegetables and fruits, etc., they are generally harvested that same day, so they are really fresh. Added to that, they are fun!

      Hi Donna,

I am happy for you. I hope your move goes smoothly. Yes, using local honey is attributed to helping with allergies. Thanks for your comment.

      Hi Ruby,

I agree. Farmer's markets are fun places in which to get locally grown fruits and veggies, and in our case, much more.

      Hi Mary,

Farmer's markets are a fun place to explore and find goodies not always available elsewhere. Each of them differs, and it is fun discovering those differences.

      Hello Bushra,

The colors are always so inviting when looking at vegetables, etc. in a farmer's market. The fresh air and milling crowds adds to the overall effect.

After I get moved next month, moving from California to Indiana. Getting back together with my husband yay... We will be going to farmer's markets and I want to get some farm fresh honey. When you buy and consume honey that has been made in your local community it helps with allergy sufferers.

      Fantastic article!

      Blessings,

There is no place I'd rather go than a farmers market. Fresh vegies and fruit. If I lived near I would shop there. Nice presentation.

I love farmers' markets and can't wait for the summer to go once again. Those cheeses look particularly good.

This looks like a wonderful farmer's market. That market has a lot to offer. We have a framer's market here but they do not have the cheeses, which is sad as yours look delicious. We do get farmers from northern FL and southern GA and there products are great.

Your pictures ae good and I can see why you would go to this market fairly often, Peggy.
