Fair Trade | Like the price of oil the price of coffee also rises

Updated on October 27, 2011

The Gift of Coffee Beans

Sit back with a cup of coffee and dream. Put pen to paper about what you want your future and the world to look like for the next generations.

Meditate with a soothing cup of coffee. Say the words of peace, unity, wisdom, truth, sacred, trust, power, freedom, salvation, glory, light and a new day. When will this eternal truth come to being? When we all love one another and provide for each other with charity and kindness.

We continue to learn about our environment and nature's bounty, but we must preserve what we have before it is desecrated and gone. The humble coffee bean teaches us to find calm and energy in our every day. Whether you wake up with coffee or drink a cup with a friend or loved one over lunch or after dinner, the bean provides a rich flavor to enhance your time together.

The Power of Your Words

What does the bean give? The plant endures varying temperatures, harsh soils, blazing sun or canopy shade, picking, drying, roasting and grinding. The holy bean, once used in religious rituals, now in daily rituals to awaken the spirit and bring people together should not be abused. Too much will affect the system in a negative way. We must find the right balance.

Take a look at the process of growing and harvesting a green fruit to drying, grinding and roasting. We give thanks for the food and beverages on our tables.

Fair Trade Coffee Becomes The Popular Trend

Environmental sustainable growing and world consciousness will change our coffee, its taste, and the energy within it. Now that countries and people are waking up to the voice of the laborers and field workers plight, plus the environmental tolls, organic fair-trade coffees abound. Scientists continue to find the antioxidant and alkaloid benefits to health.

  • "It's not surprising that demand for organic coffee is growing. Consumers are increasingly knowledgeable about the attributes of organic coffee—its benefits not only to the environment and health but also to the livelihoods of the farmers who produce it," said Christine Bushway executive director of the Organic Trade Association. The organic coffee market grew 4.1% in a year.

The Market of Rising Coffee Prices

The Going Price of Coffee Bean

The North American organic coffee market topped 1.4 billion dollars in 2009 with more than 93 million pounds of organic coffee imported into the United States and Canada, according to Giovannucci's North American Organic Coffee Industry Report 2010.

Fair Trade | Like the price of oil, the price of coffee also rises

THE cost of your daily coffee may be at an all time peak since the past 34 years. The increase has been caused by a combination of surging demand from developing economies and poor harvests of coffee beans from around the world.

This has pushed the price to more than US $3 a pound for the first time since 1977.

Mario Ritter with the VOA Special English Economics Report

Mario tells us that food prices are at an all time high due to weather conditions. If everyone has been following the news around the globe, you can't miss the enormous storms, floods, droughts, tornados, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. The earth forces and atmospheric changes will change the production of food and the marketplace. With the changing crop environment, we have increased population and growing demand for produce.

Food prices are at their highest level since the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization began keeping records in nineteen ninety.

We can turn to the connection between oil and grain production to feed animals and now the growing of plants to make fuel as the cause for higher prices. But higher food prices are not always the result of limited supplies. Coffee prices have jumped almost fifty percent in six months. Prices have reached a thirteen-year high.

Nevertheless, even with all the weather changes, coffee production predictions will be higher than ever. JM Smucker is an American company known for its jellies and fruit spreads. But Smucker also owns Folgers, America's top-selling packaged coffee. And it owns Dunkin' Donuts, which sells coffee to wash down the doughnuts at its stores. In February, Smucker said it would raise the prices of its coffee products by an average of ten percent.

Why will coffee prices rise?

  • Coffee beans going for higher prices
  • People are willing to pay the higher prices
  • Specialty coffees demand higher prices
  • Smaller, boutique, artisan, craft coffee roasters cater to the elite
  • Cost of transportation and fuel increases
  • Location, location, location
  • New world markets opening up
  • Supply and demand

Coffee Houses Around The Country

Frank Sinatra The Crooner Sings The Coffee Song

We Applaud The Small Business Owners

What happens in coffee houses around the country, each with their own particular flare, style, flavor, decor, selection of beans and roast. as prices soar? These gathering places for chit-chat, a light meal, desserts, intimate or group meetings, exchange of ideas, brain-storming sessions, music and poetry readings, game nights and more will continue.

A good friend, Pat Howlett, founder of AreaCode Ning networks has a passion and place in his heart for coffee houses, local beaneries and restaurants. He wants communities to support these small business owners and holds many monthly meetings, like Hub Hopping, to many of these places. I applaud him for the outreach work in the community.

He creates a meeting space and a work space for people to social network in a friendly atmosphere. Many experts provide talks and presentations. Everyone enjoys themselves, connects and benefits by Pat holding these events.

Hello Ian. We only had a tiny little packette of it about a year or so ago. He loves to try all the flavors of the world. If you can't travel to the location, bring it home in a cup of coffee. Looking forward to your story.

Great hub again, but I can't believe how much coffee costs. I make my own coffee at home, and when I am feeling a little less than lazy I use my caffè espresso machine, and use my favourite Lavazza. I hope it's fair trade1
