Fast Food Items With The Most Calories

Updated on April 5, 2015

Fast Food

Obesity

I've heard a lot about childhood obesity and I've never been able to see how people were able to eat so many calories in a day that they put on larger amounts of weight. Well, most people point their finger at fast food restaurants accusing them for the problem. Is fast food truly the main culprit behind the rising problem? Well, if you don't choose to order wisely, you can find yourself eating more calories in one meal then recommended as a daily intake! I eat at a fast food place or a restaurant around once a month and I found from what I usually order, I eat 550-750 calories worth of food. But, while looking at nutrition values, I also saw that various fast food restaurants have items that have over one thousand calories in them, 50% of your daily needs! So if you get two of these items your getting about 100% of your daily calories and some may even get three which is about 150% of you needs. These are calories are almost all empty calories providing little nutrition with the food. Needless to say, if you eat you eat these foods, your almost certain to eat more calories then needed, which results in weight gain. And if your thinking that you can just run it off, you might want to think again. You'd have to run about 8.5 miles (assuming you weigh 160 pounds and your running at 8 miles per hour). Below I made a chart of popular fast food restaurants foods that have over a thousand calories in them. I checked the nutrion at a few popular fast food joints: Arby's, Burger King, Hardee's, Mcdonalds, Subway, Wendy's and White Castle.

Results

There are quite a few items out their with a thousand calories or more and a couple of culprits that carry them as well. I looked at a few fast food joints of the top of my head and those were the ones that I checked. And looking at the results you could say (calorie wise) the best place to eat is Arby's and the worst is White Castle. But, this can be argued many different ways for many reasons. And just because their are items at fast food places with over 1,000 calories means that everything there is terrible for you. And you will not get fat from eating a single meal at a reasturant, you would have to eat it very consistently to put on a considerable amount of weight. So make sure to treat yourself to something every once in a while, one meal won't hurt.

I'm astounded that they manage to pack that many calories into a burger. I can make a homemade restaurant style burger with less in it than that. Do you happen to know what the culprit, and or culprits are in many of these high calorie foods?

That is crazy. Even Subway- the "healthy" alternative to fast-food has outrageous calorie counts for their sandwiches. And the thing is, fast food never fills me up no matter how much of it I eat. Probably why I never eat it. Plenty of healthier options to choose from :) Great hub!

TomBlalock- I think the cause in calories is that basically everything that they use to make food is very calorie dense. Potatoes, bread, ground chuck, oil and ridiculous amounts of sugar.

Emilybee- I also usually don't eat at fast food places, only when i'm on the run. And like you pointed out most of the time I don't even feel full after eating.

I love fast food. No matter how bad it is for me, it's like an addiction. I don't eat it as much lately but it never made me get bigger either. Just don't want to spend the extra money on it. Great hub.

Thanks cheap stuff, and as long as you eat it in moderation it's not going to make you big. And also the ones are just the most unhealthy items other items can even be healthy.

Hi greekwarrior, Yes, I knew about all the calories but if you don't see them on print like you did, you don't realize just how much. It looks like one sandwich is more then I should have in a day, just like you reported. There were times when I was on Weight Watchers and you could pick and choose items on fast food places that are within point limits, not many though. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, it is needed.

Blessings to you. I voted up.

Very interesting article. I was surprised at Sub Way though, I thought they were supposed to be a healthy fast-food place? Oh well, I hate to admit this, reading and looking at all this food has made me hungry.
