Favorite Sub Sandwich Restaurants

Updated on January 28, 2008

I have found myself eating a lot of sub sandwiches lately, for some reason. My company hosts a lot of training events that require catering, and trays of sub sandwiches are one of the post popular selections for these types of events. I've also visited several local franchise sub sandwich restaurants lately, so I found myself wondering exactly what it is that sets one apart from the other.

Lenny's: This franchise has been around for a long time, but it is a relatively new addition to my city. To me, this restaurant has many of the qualities of being a local neighborhood restaurant, even though it's a franchise operation. I usually end up ordering a hot sub or a salad whenever I go to Lenny's. Their meatball subs are among the best I've had, and I also enjoy their chicken Philly subs and salads. Lenny's also sells huge, tasty cookies in a variety of flavors. Yum!

Firehouse: There are several Firehouse Subs restaurants located throughout my city, but they company has only had locations in my area for a few years. Firehouse does several unique things that, in my opinion, set their subs apart from many other franchise operations. First, they sell chili. While this is not something you would expect to find in a sub restaurant, it is a great addition to the menu. Second, the subs are prepared in a rather unique manner. When you place your order, the meat is placed in a steamer before being added to freshly toasted bread. The end result is a juicy and delicious sandwich that isn't quite like any other I've had.

Subway: Of course, it's impossible to write an article about sub sandwich franchises without talking about Subway. There have been Subways in my city for years, as with just about every town of any size throughout the U.S., and probably many other nations. Subway offers a greater variety of bread flavors than any of the other franchises, as far as I know. It's great to be able to choose different flavors of sub bread, as well as opt for lighter wrap sandwiches when desired. My favorite Subway sandwich has always been the club, although I am now starting to get attached to the chicken bacon ranch wrap sandwiches on the franchise's menu.
