Filipino Food Cravings: Filipino Restaurant near Austin, Texas
In February 2009, it's my first month in Austin Area. I thought that it would be so easy for me to adjust on American Food because I am eating pizza, hamburger and French fries. But sad to say, there is something in Filipino way to fulfill the taste we wanted in every dishes even to American food like pizza, hamburger, fried chicken, barbeque and etc., and one thing I notice here in America mostly meat and fish were bonesless.
As days past, I've been asking myself why i don't have appetite in every meal that i had. I bought some vegetables on the grocery store but sometimes you can't get the ingredients that you really want for your planned recipe. And you are just cooking for what are available. But still, the taste would never be the same especially that there are spices and seasonings are not in store. It's weird feeling that I even craved for the simple steamed okra cooked on top of the steamed rice and dip in vinegar and soy sauce, the (camote tops) yam leaves salad with tomatoes, onions, soy sauce and vinegar, the coconut milk with the banana heart, or papaya pickles with pineapple, fish with bone grilled or fried, or the simple dried fish with mungbean. Those simple food that we Filipinos just want on our table for main menu, appetizer and sidings.
But of course those were just few days of frustrations about my cravings, because there are Filipino restaurant that we visited to atleast for few hours we Filipinos and Filipinos by heart can stay to eat Filipino food that we missed and craved for.
Here are some restaurant / store / bakery that became the meeting place of every Filipinos here in Austin. Each of them have their own specialty, mostly offers the Filipino favorites like delicacies, fruits fresh or canned, cooking ingredients, drinks, frozen cured foods, cooked dishes, even the availability of Filipino TV Network and some have free sing-along karaoke.
