Five Best Kitchen Knife Sets
One thing kitchen knives shouldn't be is just "ordinary." Remember a knife is one of the most basic pieces of equipment in your kitchen, so make sure that your knives are of best quality you can afford. It is something that you will use more than once a day for cutting, slicing and preparing food if you are any sort of cook and it is far easier to cut yourself with a bad knife than a good one. They have to be functional, sharp and have a good feel in your hands to make your cutting comfortable and natural.
Knife block sets are the most cost effective way of buying knives because every basic knife is already in there. You wouldn't need to ask an expert which kind of knives you have to purchase for your kitchen's needs. In a block set, all the knives you will need are already included.
Ginsu 4817 International Traditions 14-Piece Knife Set with Block, Natural
This set includes 7 kitchen knives, 6 steak knives and a natural colored hardwood block. The knives are symmetrically cut with 2 dimensional serrated edges for nice slicing. They are stainless steel blades that never need to be sharpened and the symmetrical serrated edges work for both left and right hand users.
These knives are light and perfectly work well with vegetables, but you may need a more substantial knife for heavy meat cutting. Having said that - as a budget set of knives, these are a great place to start. Around $27 for the full set is quite a good deal and I can certainly recommend these as a first knife set.
Oxo 1068557 Good Grips Professional 14-Piece Knife Set with Block
Now we are going up in quality a step or two. This knife block set includes 14 basic knives. With an 8 inch chefs knife, 8 inch slicer, parer, utility knife, santoku knife and 8 inch bread knife. This also has 6 steak knives and a sharpening tool. One great feature on these knives is the black nonslip rubber handles which cushion hands and gives a good grip. Oxo Good grips are famous for this - as the name implies.
This brand recommends hand washing to prevent any discoloration and spotting of the knives and I aggree. Dishwahers will eventually cause the rubber grips to become brittle and snap.
A lot more expensive than the previous set, but a far more sunstantial set of knives and still good value for money at around $75.
Shun DM2004B Classic 9-Piece Knife Set with Bamboo Block
Now we are moving into the realm of "real" knives. Shun make some of the best kitchen knives ever made, and these are no exception. This is a 9 piece knife set which includes bread, slicing, an 8 inch chef's, 6 inch chef, utility and a paring knife. It also has a sharpening steel included and a pair TaskMaster Kitchen shears. These items are made up of VG10 stainless steel clad with 16 layers of SUS410 high carbon stainless steel on each side. They are rust resistant and very elegant to look at.
The wooded block is very attractive that it really looks nice in your counter. It is not just all about the beauty because the knives themselves are almost without comparison. Cutting, slicing and mincing become effortless because they are really sharp.Made in Japan and this set comes in a gift box. Covered by a lifetime warranty.
I have had Shun knives for years - they go the distance. They do need to be kept sharp though. Beautiful, functional knives without compromise.
Wüsthof Gourmet 14-Piece Deluxe Knife Block Set
This set includes a straight edge paring knife, paring knife, utility knife, bread knife, cook's knife and a sharpening steel. It also include a come apart kitchen shears and 6 steak knives. All are placed in a 17 slot beechwood block. They are stamped laser cut blades from high carbon, stain resistant steel which sharpens easily.
Though they have cheap looking handles, it they are really good knives. As long as you sharpen them with the sharpening steel provided regularly. Hand washing is recommended.
Perhaps not quite up to the standard of the previous set - these are nonetheless a good quality set of knives. They are also considerably less expensive than the Shun set - and include a set of steak knives. An excellent buy at around $200.
J.A. Henckels 15707-000 Fine Edge Synergy 17-Piece Knife Block Set
I will leave you with another budget set as the last two were a bit on the expensive side. This is a complete set of basic knives, includes paring, utility, boning, chef's, carving, bread knife and hollow edge Santoku knife.
In addition to that this comes with a sharpening steel and 8 steak knives. The blades are hand honed stainless steel for a long lasting cutting edge. The handles are contoured rubberized plastic with brushed stainless steel cap for added security and beauty. For long lasting handles and steel, hand washing is recommended and you really have to dry them with towels.
These do need to be taken care of, but - assuming you can do so - will last a long time. Definitely recommend as a mid-price/budget set.
