Fried Green Tomatoes a Mouth Watering Treat

Updated on October 18, 2011

Fried Green Tomatoes Mighty Tasty

We live in an area of Western North Carolina where each year tomatoes are grown for local and commercial consumers. The fields up and down the river valley near our home are prepared each year just as soon as all danger of frost is past. First there is the plowing and soil preparation. Farmers now use plastic with irrigation lines contained just in case Mother Nature doesn't send the rains. The plastic also helps control weeds and insures that costly fertilize goes directly to the root system of the plants.

Once the fields are ready plants are set and as they grow will soon be staked. The tomato plants mature and are sprayed several times for insects and chemicals to reduce or prevent disease. In about 70 days from setting fruit is picked and packed in the fields and distributed to wholesalers or other markets for the consumer.

For most of us who are casual gardeners, a few plants are all we normally need and this year we had several plants that came up from last years plants. The seed from tomatoes we didn't harvest have provide us with a bounty of fresh tomatoes and now at this late time of the year we are enjoying one of my favorites, fried green tomatoes. In many restaurants these tasty appetizers are often listed on the menu as a choice along with onion rings or mozzarella cheese sticks.

I am listing a recipe for fried green tomatoes from the web in the link module, check it out. If you have never tried these made famous by "the movie" you may find them to your liking. Maybe you live in an area where tomatoes are grown and often after the harvest, farmers will allow folks to just stop and pick green tomatoes for free. Most of the time there will still be plenty of ripe and green tomatoes free for the picking. If this is your lucky day or week at the grocery store or area farmers market, don't let opportunity pass you up buy some green tomatoes and make some for dinner. Your family will be delighted.

Now you are ready for a dish that will certainly please those taste buds!

I make fried green tomatoes every summer, but this recipe looks to have more interesting ingredients than what I use. Will bookmark for the next time I get hold of some green tomatoes. Voted up, useful, interesting, and awesome! Actually, I'm now pasting this comment into the comment section on the home page, as my comments and votes aren't showing on the actual hub. Weird. Maybe it will be working right tomorrow. Great hub!
