Gravy Coconut Chicken

It is a chicken side dish having coconut as the main accompanying ingredient. Coconut imparts a slight sweetish and milky texture to the gravy. Further more coconut is rich in vitamins and minerals. It is a good antioxidant as well and prevents heart disease upto some extent. The dish goes well with rice.

Ingredients required for gravy , coconut chicken


  • Chicken 500 grams.
  • Coconut paste 5 table spoons.
  • Coconut milk 1 small cup.
  • Cashew nut paste 3 table spoons.
  • Poppy seed paste 3 table spoons.
  • Garlic paste 1 table spoon.
  • Ginger paste 1 table spoon.
  • Green chilly flakes few.
  • Bay leaves 2 pieces.
  • Cardamom powder ½ tea spoon.
  • Cinnamon powder ½ tea spoon.
  • Chopped onions (2 medium sized).
  • Refined sunflower oil 8 table spoons.
  • Vinegar 2 tea spoon.
  • Salt
  • Sugar 2 table spoons.
  • Red chilly powder 3 table spoons.
  • Water 1/2 cup
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing.

Ingredients-

Procedure-

  • Marinate the chicken with vinegar and keep in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • In a pan, heat refined sunflower oil and add bay leaves.
  • When the bay leaves are brown ,add the chopped onions and stir the chopped onions until they are golden brown.
  • Then one by one add garlic paste, ginger paste, green chilly flakes red chilly powder and sauté for 5 minutes.
  • Add chicken pieces and sauté for 5-6 minutes.
  • Then add ½ cup of water to it and mix.
  • Now, to it add cashew nut paste, poppy seed paste followed by coconut paste.
  • Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  • Pour the coconut milk , mix it and cover the pan for 7-8 minutes.
  • Now open the lid and add cardamom , cinnamon powder, salt and sugar.
  • Sauté for 5 minutes and again cover the pan for 1 minute.
  • Open the lid and stir until the gravy is thick and smooth in texture.
  • Serve it hot after garnishing with coriander leaves.

Step 1

In a pan, heat refined sunflower oil and sir bay leaves in it.

Add the chopped onions and stir until they are golden-brown.

Step 3

Add ginger ,garlic paste and green chilly flakes and stir.

Then add red chilly powder and saute for 5 minutes

Then add the marinated chicken pieces and fry.

Add cashew nut paste and poppy seed paste to the chicken

Add coconut milk and coconut paste and mix well with the curry.

Add cinnamon , cardamom powder, salt and sugar.

Cover the pan with lid.

Step 10

Serve it hot after garnishing with corainder leaves.

Butter Yoghurt Chicken

It is another chicken side dish, cooked in butter. Yoghurt makes the chicken softer and the gravy smoother.

It goes well with rice and plain boiled noodles (spiced with salt and black pepper).

Butter Yoghurt Chicken

Ingredients required for Butter Yoghurt Chicken-

  • Chicken breast 500 grams cut into medium pieces.
  • Butter 50 grams.
  • Yoghurt about 10-12 table spoons.
  • Refined oil 3 table spoons.
  • Ginger paste 1 table spoon.
  • Garlic paste 1 table spoon.
  • Red chilly powder 2 table spoons.
  • Tomato chopped (1 medium sized)
  • Onion paste 1 table spoon.
  • Salt .
  • Sugar 1 table spoon.
  • Water 2 cups.
  • Coriander leaves and fresh cream for garnishing.

Procedure for Butter Yoghurt Chicken-

  • In a pan, heat refined oil , followed by butter and allow the butter to melt.
  • Add onion paste, garlic and ginger paste and sauté for 5-6 minutes.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and saute.
  • To this add the chicken pieces, yoghurt and red chilly paste. Stir and sauté well.
  • To this now add water and cover the pan with a lid for 10-15 minutes.
  • Open the lid occasionally and stir to prevent sticking of gravy to the pan.
  • Finally open the lid, add sugar and salt.
  • Sauté until the gravy is thick.
  • Serve it hot after garnishing with fresh white cream and a few coriander leaves,

Instructions for cooking BUTTER ,YOGHURT CHICKEN

Add onion, ginger , garlic paste and saute for 5-7 minutes.

Add the chopped tomatoes in the pan and stir well.

Step 4

Then add the chicken and red chilly powder to it and saute.

Then add yoghurt and saute for 2-4 minutes. Add sugar and salt to it

Step 6

Then cover the pan with a lid and keep it covered until the gravy is thick.

Step 7

Serve it hot after garnishing with fresh cream and coriander leaves.

Cooking TIPS-

  1. Always add some oil with butter while cooking. It prevents the ingredients from sticking to the pan.
  2. Never add salt for marinating the chicken . It dehydrates the chicken and makes it stiff.
  3. Yoghurt is a good softening agent for chicken.
