Guide To Essential BBQ Accessories

Updated on August 20, 2009

Essential BBQ Accessories Go Well Beyond Just A Fire!

Ask anyone and they will tell you that an essential part of barbecuing is having the right accessories! Therefore you would be well advised to ensure that you have the essential BBQ accessories before planning your next outdoor cookery expedition! For hundreds of years, people have cooked their food over the open flames of burning wood or glowing charcoals. This early method of cooking was done on nothing more than a fire pit with the only essential BBQ accessories being a fire, but eventually people started to implement features similar to what you now find on a modern day barbecue. The first step was to add a metal grill or grate to the fire pit. Prior to this, meat was simply skewered and turned over the flames by hand. These days, many barbecues come standard with a rotisserie feature that does all the work for you! But there are many more essential BBQ accessories that are de rigeur for any outdoor chef!

Essential BBQ Accessories Are The Outdoor Chef's Best Friends

There are many essential barbecue tools that will make barbecuing a simple process for even the most inexperienced cooks.

Tongs have to be one of the most important bbq accessories. They are great for turning food of any size or shape and are long enough to prevent the heat from burning your hands. Avoid plastic tongs that can melt. Stainless steel is the best choice as they're easy to clean and resist rusting.

Spatulas are handy for flipping burgers and meat, especially if the meat sticks a bit to the grill. Again, stainless steel is the best choice as its strong enough to handle high heat but still flexible enough to get under a piece of meat without tearing it up.

A basting brush is essential for applying sauces and marinades. A silicon brush is great for this as they're more durable than the bristle kind and can be placed in the dishwasher for an easy clean up. They also won't leave bristles on your food. Yuck!

Essential BBQ Accessories Include Trays & Gloves!

If you ever use trays on your barbecue you will need a good set of bbq gloves to protect your hands. Choose ones made of silicon or a flame resistant material to avoid catching them on fire.

A quality wire brush is important for removing charred food from the grate. Any burnt food stuck to the grill can add an undesirable flavor to everything you cook. It is helpful to let your barbecue warm up before you scrape it down. The heat will loosen all the old food.

A Meat Thermometer Is One Of The Most Essential BBQ Accessories

If you barbecue a lot of meat it's important to have a thermometer on hand. This eliminates the guess work of determining if the meat is cooked properly. These days you can even get digital thermometers with alarms that alert you when the meat has reached the desired temperature!

Anyone who owns a propane barbecue knows that the first feature to wear down or break is the built-in igniter. For this reason, it's good to keep a refillable barbecue lighter on hand for lighting the burners.

Having the right barbecue tools is important, but remember to take care of the barbecue itself. A quality BBQ cover will prevent rust and keep your grill clean!

The Right BBQ Accessories Make Grilling Easy!
