Healthier Snacks For a Healthier You

The Time is Now

It's all too normal for us to say that we will start being healthier tomorrow, or next week, but in reality no time is better than the present. So when you're resolving to be a healthier person, understand that the time is now to start making a difference.

With that being said, you can start being healthier by choosing smart snack choices. Here are some healthy options to get you started.

Glamified Fruit

Of course we all know that fruit is good for us, but that doesn't make it any more fun (or tasty) to eat. So when you want to eat your fruit servings, don't be afraid to glamify it.

Add a tablespoon of peanut butter or a dash of cinnamon to your apple slices, splenda to your grapefruit halves, or maybe some melted dark chocolate on your strawberries! Need to give a healthy gift? Why not opt for a fresh fruit gift basket? Anything to make the idea of eating fruit more fun.

Get creative, but make sure you're keeping your glam-sides to a low amount of calories. The idea is to supplement the fruit, not make the fruit the side dish.

Portioned Packs

I'm sure you've seen the 100-calorie packs out there. They give you the ability to eat your usual yummy snacks, but keep your calorie intake to a low limit. These are wonderful to keep in your desk at work, or in your purse for on-the-go moments.

Options for these yummy 100-calorie packs include classic treats like: Chips Ahoy, Oreo Thin Crisps, Chex Mix, Nila Wafers, and more. These are also great healthy food gifts for those friends and family who are also trying to be healthy!

Snacks With a Spoon

If you've got a spoon handy, then these snacks will make you happy! There are lots of options when it comes to eating healthy from a cup.

For starters, there's greek yogurt. Packed with protein, it's a great mid-day snack or for before or after a workout. There is also applesauce, cottage cheese, and oatmeal.

All of these snacks are great substitutes for that vending machine candy bar you usually break for.

Fast & Easy Snacks

Don't have time to make a snack, or not many options other than a gas station? There are still many choices you can find even then. Items like string cheese, fat free pretzels, and pita chips can be healthier options. Also look for unsalted nuts for a filling snack.

You can also usually find items that might be considered breakfast foods, but they still work! Things like whole grain cereal (Wheaties, Cheerios, Chex) are good options, along with bars like Fiber One, Kashi or Nature Valley.

Last resort option, you can pick out what you usually eat and opt for a healthier version like sugar free cookies, or reduced-fat chips.

Drinking Healthy

Foods aren't the only things that can be unhealthy, your drinks can too. If you regularly drink soda or sugar-filled coffee drinks, these can be unhealthy as well! Instead of downing these beverages, try drinking water instead!

Drinking your 8 glasses of water a day will help more than just your physique, it is also great for your skin (which is your largest organ after all) along with detoxifying your body. Bored with water? Consider adding in a packet of flavor like Crystal Light or Mio.

Many people would advice you stay away from sugary juices and sports drinks as well. If you want to drink juice, consider making your own by juicing fruits and veggies. It makes a huge difference and there are no preservatives when you drink it this way!

This was an awesome read. Lots of good info to remember. I always try to remind myself to drink more water but I am not that great at that.

My favorite snack is wheat crisps. I'm a savory sort of person...these satisfy the craving for potato chips too! Thanks for sharing!

"Glamified Fruit" - now that is a fun term I've never heard before. Great topic for this time of year!

P.S. You need an 8+ glasses of water a day for your poll. I drink A LOT of water :)

Wow, I loved this article! You're right - there's so much you can do to 'glam' up fruit (and veggies). I love adding cinnamon to apples, honey to bananas, etc. I eat a lot of healthy foods, and it's frustrating that there aren't enough healthy take-out options available here. Especially for people who are gluten-intolerant, etc. Hopefully SA will get with the times soon. Thanks so much for sharing, voted up and shared!
