Honey is not just a sweetener; it is so much more than that. Many people think of honey as nature’s sweetener, and they are correct about that, but that is just the beginning of what honey can do. Let me give you just a few little interesting facts about bees, did you know that bees will visit up to 100 different flowers in their search for nectar? Yes, and they can also travel at up to 15 mph and go as far as 9 miles! Honey is sweeter than sugar, and due to its high sugar content it is a great anti-biotic.

Honey can be used as a natural and delicious alternative to white sugar, and is available year round. However, in the summer it’s at it’s freshest. In ancient times honey was a sign of wealth, because it was too expensive for everyone else.

History

Honey has been made by bees for millions of years; therefore it may be the world’s oldest home remedy. There are references to honey dating back 7,500 years in Egypt and Samaria. Egypt had over 900 remedies out of that 500 of the remedies included honey. In medieval times honey was used to help make medicines easier to take, and externally to help wounds heal faster.

Science

Science tells us that honey can help wounds to heal faster; a study conducted in the U.K. showed that honey from New Zealand helped to heal wounds from radiation therapy.

What’s in it?

Believe it or not, honey is mostly sugars. It contains 38% fructose, 31% glucose, and it is true that raw honey has been shown to prevent colon cancer in lab animals. Honey contains antioxidants including one called pinocembrin. The Chinese have tested this in test tubes and animals, pinocembrin seems to protect brain cells, however; they are not sure of the effects on humans. Other antioxidants include quercetin, kaempferol, and apigenin.

Honey is a gentle wound healer, due to the high content of sugar, hydrogen peroxide, and propolis (a compound in nectar that kills bacteria); this content pulls moisture from the wound and prevents bacteria from growing. Not only that, but it prevents external contamination, and helps wounds to heal faster.

Health Benefits of Honey

  1. Raw honey is a great anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. You must keep in mind the quality of the honey is important. When honey is processed it loses some of its healthful qualities.
  2. Use honey to help control and relieve a cough caused by an upper respiratory infection. It is best to use buckwheat honey for this.
  3. Honey possesses large amounts of friendly bacteria, which is what researchers believe is responsible for the therapeutic properties of honey.
  4. Honey also may promote better blood sugar control. Honey is liver fuel, due to the contents of 1:1 ratio of fructose to glucose.
  5. The body seems to tolerate honey better than white sugar.
  6. Honey it a great cough suppressor for children between the ages of 2-18
  7. Honey boosts immunity.
  8. Honey is a great energy source, it helps to improve athletic performance, and heal wounds.
  9. It seems that honey consumed on a daily basis can raise the blood levels of a protective anti-oxidant in humans.
  10. Honey is helpful to people with Type 2 Diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Honey can be found in grocery stores, and is usually pasteurized, but if you look around a farmer’s market you can most likely find raw honey. It is sold in individual containers or in bulk. Keep in mind that raw honey has not been pasteurized, or filtered, and it has the highest nutritional value. Honey is usually a nice golden color, but you can also find a darker honey called “honeydew”.
