Gum Paste from Scratch

Hey everyone, so in addition to the How to make fondant and butter cream we have this segment titled: How to make Gum-Paste. Now recently I was at a friends house, helping her make a cake and she was using gum paste for some detailed pieces, well me being the slow headed one, I wasn't aware that Gum-Paste came pre-made, I usually make it from the instructions on the back of the Glucose container. So i thought I might put together this Hub to show everyone out there how to make Gum-Paste. Now eventually I will be doing videos and putting them out on YouTube but at the moment I just have the video recorder that comes with my cool-pix camera and I don't want the video to come out all crappy so for now I will just try my best to give you detailed instructions into making great stuff for your cakes. So lets get started.

Things you Will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of Gum-Tex
  • 3 cups sifted powdered sugar (confectioners sugar)(about 3/4 lb)
  • 1 "heaping" tablespoon of Glucose
  • 4 tablespoons warm water
  • and for afterward another cup of powdered sugar.

So first let me tell you about the Gum-Tex and the Glucose. These two things are not your everyday supplies, the best place you can find them is at you local crafting supply store and you can find them in the Wilton section. On the picture you can see what the ingredients look like.

Ok first step:

Take your 3 cups of sugar and mix together with your Gum-Tex. After that its easier if you make a well (hole) in the middle of the sugar, this is where the other ingredients will go.

Grab a microwaveable glass and pour the amount of warm water as instructed into the glass, Next mix in the Glucose with the water, Give it a little blend. Now pop the two mixtures into the microwave and put on high for about 30 seconds. Take out the mixtures and see if its clear like water, if it is not clear then you need to put it back in the microwave for about another10-15 seconds until clear.

Take you liquids and pour into the center of the confectioners sugar. Mix together until it becomes soft, your gum-paste may be a little hard but don't worry this is fine. Finally you want to take all of your now constructed gum-paste and tightly seal it in a bag. Leave it out for 8 hours before you use it. The gum-paste has to set for that long, if not it will not work correctly. Gum paste is edible however it does not taste good at all. It is mainly for decoration and gives your cakes and cupcakes a professional look.

WARNING: Gum-paste drys out very quickly so when not in use wrap in a tightly sealed bag. If gum-paste becomes hard just warm it up in the microwave for 10 seconds and it should become soft again.

When kneading gum-paste it is best to where gloves and spread Crisco all around your gloves to prevent sticking. Gum-paste can also be colored so don't be shy and make the colors you need.

Well I hope you enjoyed this information. If you have any questions go ahead and leave a comment and I will answer them. Also check out my website below for more pictures of gum-paste and more! Check out the links below.

About that last cup of confectioner sugar, does that need to be added before you use or store it? And how long can you store it for?
