How To Make German Hot Potato Salad and Bohemian Pork Chops

Updated on June 22, 2011

Today, you're going to learn how to prepare a wonderful German meal.

Ingredients for Salad:

1kg (2 lb.) boiling pototoes, cooked, peeled, cubed (warm)
125 mL (1/2 cup) diced onion
250 g (1/2 lb.) diced, cooked bacon
25 mL (2 tablespoons) bacon drippings
25 mL (2 tablespoons) flour
25 mL (2 tablespoons) sugar
25 mL (2 tablespoons) butter or margerine
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) salt and a dash of pepper
200 mL (3/4 cup) water
125 mL (1/2 cup) red wine vinegar
200 mL (3/4 cup) sour cream
parsley sprigs
pimiento strips

Let's begin by adding an onion to warm potatoes.
Stir the flour into bacon drippings in a large fry pan. Add sugar, butter, salt, pepper, water and vinegar. Bring this mixture to a boil while stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in sour cream.
Now add potatoes, onion and half the bacon. Gently toss this all around without getting any on the ceiling.
Turn all this into a heated salad bowl. Garnish with the remaining bacon, parsley and pimiento strips.

Dinner for six is now served.

Ingredients for Bohemian Pork Chops:

4 pork loin chops
50 mL (1/4 cup) chopped onion with a pinch of pepper
1-284 mL (10 ounce) can chicken broth
2 mL (1/2 teaspoon) caraway seed
1 mL (1/4 teaspoon) celery seed
375 mL (1-1/2 cups) sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
1 red apple, diced

Brown your pork chops and onion in a large fry pan.
Stir in pepper, chicken broth, caraway seed and celery seed. Cover and cook for 45-50 minutes.
Add sauerkraut and apple. Simmer 10-15 minutes more.

This will feed 4 people.

However long it takes for you to travel 3,000 miles. I'll try and keep it warm but you might have to settle for dessert --- like homemade German "Black Forest Cake" -- yum yum.
