Some Things You May Not Know About Meatloaf.

I remember my Mom and Grandma making meatloaf all the time when I was a child. I remember my Dad took meatloaf sandwiches to work almost everyday and it was not until I grew up that I developed a taste for those delicious cold meatloaf sandwiches. In case you don't know cold meatloaf sandwiches are one of the most delicious sandwiches you'll ever eat. They are so wonderful.

The History Of Meatloaf.

In Germany they hide boiled eggs inside their meatloaf's and in Italy wine soaked bread is often added to the meatloaf. In very early Europe meatloaf's were made with fruits, nuts, and berries added to the meatloaf. Meatloaf's have been made in most parts of Europe for around a thousand years now. In Ireland the meatloaf is often topped with homemade mashed potatoes and toasted brown under the oven broiler.

When And Why Meatloaf Became Popular In America.

In America during the great depression people added rolled oats, saltine crackers, and bread crumbs to their meat to stretch the meatloaf and make it go further. And that's really how Americas love affair with meatloaf got started. Before long people were making it all kinds of ways and it wasn't long before people started making tomato gravy or brown gravy to serve over their meat loaf and homemade mashed potatoes. Its also wonderful served with green bean casserole. Click either one of those links for those recipes here at Hub Pages. And don't forget the homemade buttermilk biscuits. They go so wonderful with the tomato gravy.

This sounds fantastic, Mr. B! My mother used to make a nice meatloaf, sometimes scoring the top with a drizzle of catsup and mustard. It was quite good, too.
