Tofu (Soya Paneer)

Source

Tofu is soybean curd prepared by coagulating the soy milk solids and then making them into a solid block by keeping weight on it for some period of time.

If you think it is difficult to make soy paneer or tofu at home then rest assured it is extremely easy. Moreover, it will be a chemical and preservative free and therefore much healthier than the store bought. And you can make it whenever you wish.

It would be better if you prepare soy milk at home with soybeans first and then make tofu from it. Check out my easy and simple homemade soy milk recipe, which is also preservative free, on this website. In fact, this tofu has been prepared from soy milk which I had prepared at home a day earlier.

Tofu is a great alternative to dairy paneer/cottage cheese as it is not only lactose-free, it is also high in protein of vegetable origin, which is what vegans would wish for.

Cook Time

Cook time: 1 hour
Ready in: 1 hour
Yields: 1-2 servings

Ingredients

  • 500 ml soy milk
  • 1 lemon/lime

Instructions

  1. Heat the soya milk till bubbles start appearing in the hot milk
  2. Reduce heat to low and squeeze the lemon juice into it
  3. Stir constantly till all the soy curds separate out, about two minutes
  4. Strain out the tofu in a muslin cloth and fold the cloth and place some weight on it and allow to set for at least thirty minutes so that it sets into a solid block
  5. Use immediately. Altenately, you can store the tofu in the fridge by keeping it in a water-filled, closed box, for about 8 days, but change the water every day
  6. My recipe video below shows how easy it is to make tofu at home
