How do you make Hummus?

Updated on January 8, 2013
Mmmm.... Hummus
Mmmm.... Hummus

How I made Hummus for the first time in my life!

I'm 28 years old and have never cooked a proper meal! At the most I can make eggs on toast and a pasta bake, that's as far as I go, disappointing, I know! However, I can now add Hummus to my 'long' list of dishes. I was asked to make it for the Xmas party at my workplace and I have a little trouble saying no, so I couldn't refuse. At first I was worried it will come out all wrong and no one will eat it, but I was following instructions from the recipe book and thought "how hard can it be?". Either way, if it didn't work out, Sainsbury's is next door ;)

Anyway.... Hours later, I finally finished and it was a success, woo hoo! So if I can make it, anyone can =)

For your average person, preparation should only take up to 10mins.

Start off with draining 3 cans of chick peas, place into a food processor and whizz with a little cooking water until smooth. Add desired amount of ground cumin, chilli powder, juice from 2 lemons, olive oil and a pinch of salt and blend again (you may need to add a little water at this point, depends on thickness) If you like garlic, then you can add one crushed clove. Serve drizzled with olive oil plus warm pitta bread for scooping your delicious hummus with.

(for Silva) Hummus can work with no tahini, especially if you use a bit more olive oil. Or you can order tahini online, from

Anika, here are a couple of dishes to leverage your success with hummus. Black bean soup with orange juice is an easy bean dish. And you can make guacamole (with avocados) if you can make hummus. Keep us posted on your cooking adventures!

I made hummus yesterday and it is so good! I cooked a half-pound of navy beans and substituted them for the chickpeas. I also finally found tahini in the store and added a third-cup of tahini to your recipe. Mmmmm-so delicious.

I got my first food processor not long ago, and hummus was the first thing I made with it. I was apprehensive, like you, but to my surprise it actually came out pretty good.

I bookmarked your recipe to try later. Voted up and useful.

Mmmm, sounds good. The hummus recipe I have calls for Tahini (ground up sesame seeds) and I can't find Tahini in our local grocery stores. What's next? Are you planning on expanding your repertoire of recipes?
