Be like Don Draper... Drink Old-Fashioneds

How cool is Don Draper?

The fictious character played by Jon Hamm, is the Creative Director for Manhattan's Sterling Cooper advertising agency somehow managed to become the Most Influential Man in the world according to the 2009 Edition of Ask Men, even ahead of real-life people you may have heard of like Barack Obama. If that doesn't speak volumes as too just how cool Don Draper is, well, you probably wouldn't know cool if it hit you in the throat right above the awkward collar of your Member's Only jacket.

Aside from his talent as the creative mind behind multiple successful advertising campaign's. Don Draper is well known for his love of women (even if it means stepping out on his beautiful wife), impeccable suits, chain-smoking, and having multiple drinks on the clock. His favorite mixed spirit being the Old-Fashioned.

To make a Borboun Old-Fashioned you will need the following ingeredients:

3 ounces of Bourbon

3 Dashes of Biters

1 Maraschino Cherry

1 Orange Slice

1 Lemon Wedge

1 Sugar Cube

Directions to make your Bourbon Old-Fashioned:

In a double Old-Fashioned glass (any glass that can hold up to 10 ounces will work but a wider cup works better for mixing the ingredients), add the sugar cube, lemon wedge, orange slice, maraschino cherries, and bitters. Mash these up (this is also known as muddling the ingredients) with a wooden muddling stick, or a spoon will work perfectly well if you don't have one. Next add 3 to 4 ice cubes. Add the 3 ounces of Bourbon (If you are not quite the heavyweight that our boy Don Draper is, you can knock down the recipe to 2 ounces). Splash in some cold water (about an ounce should do, but this is also based on your own personal preferences). Stir briefly. Add orange and lemon zest along with two small cocktail stirs for a fancier presentation. Serve preferably after 5pm, but if you watch Mad Men, you probably already know that it's 5pm somewhere...

Now you are one step closer to being like the famous Don Draper. Be careful not to overdo it though... There is also no need to necessarily fall into his other well known habits. In fact, you should probably just leave the womanizing, purchases of Brooks Brothers suits, creation of a hard-hitting advertising campaign, and chain smoking to the original. Enjoy...

* You could also create a very similiar drink by subsitituting regular whiskey for the bourbon based on your own preferences.
