How to Make a Spicy Taco Pizza

Updated on September 8, 2014

Making Pizza Isn't Difficult

Making a pizza is pretty easy. I enjoy making my own, because I get to decide exactly what goes on it. I have come up with many creative variations in the two years I have been making my own, and this was the first of many successful attempts.

Pizza Crust Options:

There are many options to use for a pizza crust:

  • Make the crust yourself
  • Pre-made pizza dough
  • French bread, cut in half
  • Flatbread
  • English muffins for single-serve pizzas

If you use pizza dough that hasn't been cooked yet, follow my directions, or else follow the directions on the package.

If you use pre-cooked pizza crust, or bread, you'll want to preheat the oven to about 425ยบ about 5-10 minutes before you slide the pizza in the oven. Cook the meat and veggies in advance, add them onto the bread, and put in the oven for about 4-5 minutes, until the cheese has melted.

Yield:

2 servings, 3 slices each

Cook Time

Preparation:

  • Toppings: 5-10 minutes
  • Putting the pizza together: 10 minutes

Cooking:

  • Toppings: 15-20 minutes
  • Pizza: 8-18 minutes

Total time: 40-60 minutes *

* Note: If you make your own pizza dough, it will take approximately 10 minutes to mix up, and 45 minutes to let it rise. If you let it rise while you are preparing the toppings, the whole process should take right around 1-1 1/2hours (60-90 minutes).

Variations

Just Ask Susan said she is going to try making a pizza with jalapenos for "a real spicy kick", and next time I make this, I am going to try it that way.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup ground beef or turkey, cooked
  • 1/4 cup onions, sauteed
  • 1/4 cup peppers, sauteed
  • 2 teaspoons taco seasoning
  • sprinkle black pepper, to taste
  • 1/8 cup black olives, (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon hot sauce, (optional)
  • 1/4 cup salsa
  • 1/8 cup tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup cheese
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, (optional)
  • 1 pizza crust or bread

Instructions:

  1. Cook ground beef thoroughly. Using a meat thermometer, the temperature of the meat should be at least 160 degrees
  2. Saute onions and green peppers. If you add them to ground beef, don't do until the meat is fully cooked. I like to saute them for about 5 minutes on medium/low
  3. Drain the meat
  4. Sprinkle taco seasoning over the cooked meat and veggies
  5. In a seperate bowl, mix the tomato sauce, salsa and hot sauce. If desired, heat them up (I like to heat all of the toppings up in advance, especially if they have been in the fridge. It is not necessary, though)
  6. Measure out the black olives, if using, as well as the cheese

Putting it All Together

  • Sprinkle dough or bread with parmesan cheese, if desired
  • Spread the tomato sauce mix over it
  • Sprinkle some of the cheese over it
  • Add the ground beef and veggies
  • Sprinkle with black olives, if desired
  • If you have any cheese left, sprinkle it on top
  • If using precooked crust or bread, cook for 5 minutes or until cheese has melted. If you are using an uncooked crust, leave in oven for about 8-15 minutes, until crust is browned and cheese has melted.

      VVanNess,

I'm glad you like my variation, and if you try it I hope you enjoy. I like being creative with pizza, too. Lately I have made several other kinds, depending on what I have around, and I have made cheesy breadsticks with this same dough. Yum.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and have a wonderful day!

      Rebecca,

This makes me hungry every time I come here! When I have time, I have several other hubs on pizza and breadsticks to post. Every time I make my own dough, I refer to this for the recipe.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, as well as for sharing.

      Have a great day.

      Eddy,

Thanks, I really like this pizza. I don't make it as much now that I only cook for one, but it is worth the effort.

      Insane Mundane,

Thanks for trying to vote it, even if it didn't work!

I love these pizzas, too, and I think making my own is such a satisfying experience. I can make it exactly the way I like! My roommate is growing these Trinidad Scorpion peppers. Maybe next time I make the pizza, he will let me use a (very) small piece of a pepper for extra heat.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and have a wonderful day.

Mmm, I think a vegetarian pizza will be one of my upcoming hubs, because that sounds great. My roommate likes meat, so I cater to his tastes, but as soon as I move out on my own I won't be eating much meat.

What a delicious and beautiful recipe hub! I love spicy food and this pizza looks yummy. However, I'll omit the meat and just add some extra vegetables and make it into a vegetarian. Lyricalvibes,

I've had the Mexican Pizza at Taco Bell, too. It used to be one of my favorite things there, although I haven't had it in a while. It's sad when companies change the recipe, and they don't taste as good as they do originally.

I think this recipe is very good, and my housemate loves it when I cook this for supper! It is very delicious, and I enjoyed sharing it so that others could enjoy it as well.

Thanks for reading and commenting, and have a wonderful night!

I occasionally get the Mexican pizza from Taco Bell but I think the recipe has changed over the years and it doesn't taste as good as I remembered the first time, this recipe looks way more appealing than the Mexican pizza from taco bell.

Beans- what a great idea! I have never put beans on the pizza, but I want to try that next time I make it. Thanks for the inspiration!

If you try this out, I hope you and your boyfriend love it. We sure do! Once I started making this for Andy, he started requesting it pretty much once a week or two.

      Cat,

Oh, no, I hate craving something that I can't make right then and there! It's torture! Mmm, I love both pizza and tacos, too, obviously.

No, you will not turn into a Gremlin if you crave or eat this after midnight. At least not as far as I know. Haha, I was a little scared of the movie "Gremlins" when I was a kid! I loved the first movie or two, but it was kind of creepy that they turned into vicious creatures under certain conditions.

I'm glad you like this, and thanks for the compliment! When I write recipes down, it's hard to stop at just a quick recipe.

I love using honey in the crust. It adds just a touch of sweetness. Of course, sugar does that, too. I just like the idea of squeezing some sticky honey in there better. Yum!

Thanks, Cat. I hope you slept okay, and that you have a beautiful day!

Suzzycue, I completely understand that! Up until a few months ago, I didn't like to bother with making my own crust. It's nice that there are so many great options for pre-made crusts. I like using flatbread, or sometimes English muffins. They're convenient and tasty.

In my experience, cornmeal on the bottom of the pan hasn't burned at all. I prefer it over flour (mostly because of the corny taste).

Rebecca, I'm glad you like my crust recipe. I only recently got the hand of making a good pizza crust. Once I bought a rolling pin, and rolled it thin enough, it cooked much better. Before then, it was hard to get the dough to all cook through. Now that I have made it several times, it is a cinch, and always comes out delicious!

I haven't heard of taco pizza much, but I love any type of taco or tortilla wrap, and I wanted to make a pizza that was just as delicious.

Suzie, wow, a pizza oven must be a great thing to have! I like watching "HouseHunters International", a Home and Garden Television show that takes place in different places around the world, and there were a few homes in Italy that were very interesting. One of them had a pizza oven. Several of the places they showed were very old and rustic, but once the new homeowners put work into it, they turned out looking pretty good. I can't imagine living anywhere other than the USA. Italy would be at the top of my list if I lived somewhere else, although I'm sure the idea of what it's like and the reality would be completely different.

I'm so glad you liked my recipe hub. My boyfriend liked it so much, and it was so easy (time-consuming, but worth it!) that I didn't want to miss the opportunity to write a hub about it!

I love pizza so this is just the ticket to in the groove for our life in Italy. We have an original pizza oven outside there which really excites me to learn to use for baking! Thanks soooooo much, voting everything, sharing everywhere and pinning! Great recipe!!!

Vespawoolf, thank you for the compliment! I have only recently been making pizza. One time before the crust came out a bit thick and doughy. But once I bought a rolling pin to help me roll the dough out, it was much easier to get it just right. Ever since then, it has been a cinch! I'm making some tonight for my boyfriend's birthday (out of everything I bake, this is what he asked for), so I look forward to a delicious meal tonight. This time I have shredded cheese, as well as a few other toppings, so I can make an even tastier one!

You're welcome for the English muffin recipe mention. It is such a novel idea, and works well with my pizza recipe.

Thanks, Vespawoolf, I appreciate your feedback. When you have an oven again, I hope you enjoy this recipe (or whatever variation of it you use). Have a good weekend!

Wow, you are quite the expert at homemade pizza! I like your two-pan method for a crispy crust. My husband was just talking to his cousin yesterday with "face time" and they were eating purchased taco pizza. Once we have an oven again, I plan to make this for my husband. When we order pizza, we request no olives. I plan to link my calzone hub to this one--thank you for the mention of my English muffin recipe!

Sneha, thanks for reading and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like the feel of making something from scratch. It is very satisfying to make it when I have time. Actually, I am making a couple of pizzas tonight, in celebration of my boyfriend's birthday. Out of all of the meals I cook, this is the one he chose for tonight.

      I hope you enjoy it!

CharronsChatter, this is really tasty! I always like to put a new spin on recipes. It would have been ideal to use shredded Mexican blend cheese (maybe next time), but I only had sliced cheese on hand. It was still great!

Thanks, I'm glad you like my layout. I spent quite a bit of time on it, but it was fun.

I'm holding up, and the many Bostonians really have pulled together. Now that the second bombing suspect has been found, we can breathe easy, and hopefully those who were hurt the most will heal okay. I feel for them.

Thanks again for reading and commenting on my article. Since you are a foodie diva, it is especially a great compliment!

Your layout is just incredible, too, so well put together and informative. I am going to try to figure out how to share, but for sure I have voted things with thumbs!! :)

      Vicki,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's nervous about 550 degree. The 450 degrees worked perfectly fine for me, so I wouldn't even bother to turn mine on higher than that.

Thanks for reading and commenting, and I'm so glad you like it! Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon!

Janet, I like adding lots of photos for these hubs. I am a visual person, and it is nice to see the different steps.

It is great for people who love spicy food! Although it would be easy to leave out the spiciness, if someone doesn't like much spice.

Thanks for reading and commenting, and have a nice day!

I always keep my eyes on a lookout for hubs that are related, because I like to supplement my own article, as well as send people to other fantastic hubs.
