How to Tell if a Peach is Ripe

Updated on February 21, 2018

What is a Peach?

The peach is a delicious, sweet, and juicy fruit that grows on trees. The peach is native to China and South Asia.

Although categorized as different fruits, the peach is actually the same species as the nectarine. The difference between the two is that nectarines have smooth skins and peaches have fuzzy skins.

How to Tell if a Peach is Ripe

As a peach ripens, the part facing the sun gets a reddish hue and the part not exposed to sun turns from green to yellow. The best way to tell if a peach is ripe is by looking for the red and yellow color on a peach and making sure that it is not green.

A peach will become round as it ripens.

If a peach is firm, it is not yet ripe. A ripe peach will be soft to the touch and will yield slightly to gentle pressure. If a peach is extremely soft or mushy, it is overripe.

A ripe peach will have a sweet aroma to it.

How to Ripen a Peach

Like many other fruits, peaches continue to ripen after they have been picked. Therefore, if you buy peaches that are not ripe yet, you can ripen them by leaving them at room temperature. Peaches will ripen faster if you store them in a brown paper bag.
