How to make pea pulao

Ingredients and method

Pea Pulao is a lightly spiced rice dish that can accompany many different meals. You can adjust the spices according to taste.

This dish can be used as a side for both Western based and East Indian cuisine. This recipe serves 4-6. Use one cup rice/two cups water for 2-3 people and reduce peas.

You will need:

2 cups basmati rice

1 medium onion

1/4lb green peas (frozen or fresh)

12 black peppercorns

2 black cardamom

1tsp cumin seed

1 piece of cinamon stick

2 tbsp oil or shortening or butter

1 tsp salt

4 cups water


Wash and soak rice in cold water. Chop onion and brown in oil or butter, add spices and fry for about 5 minutes

Drain the rice and add to the onions and spices

Add the peas and water and mix ingredients together

Bring to the boil

Cover pan, reduce heat and cook until water has absorbed - about 20 mins

      A friend once taught me how to make rice which she called rice Pilau - it might be related to this rice you have here. I love rice dishes because I come from a culture where rice is not a staple so I have had to learn how to make it and the more recipes I have under my belt the better. Thanks for sharing Lizam, most appreciated.
