If you want a quick snacks or breakfast and you can see nothing but some old brerad in the fridge then Bread Upma is the best way to use up old bread, and a quick and easy breakfast. However it is advisable to eat it as soon as it is taken off the gas because the bread soaks up the gravy and turns soggy really fast.There is another recipe to prepare it dry where you will see piece of bread in its shape, for which I will post another recipe. For Dry one you will need either ketchup or lots of pickle.


  • 8-10 slices of bread which are cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup onion which is almost a midium sized onion, sliced
  • 1/4 tablespoon of red chili powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoon to lemon juice
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes (2-3 tomatoes)
  • 5-6 green chili (to your taste) - I like it bit hot

  • 2 tablespoon of sliced of ginger
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • 1/4 cup corriander leaves
  • 2-3 mint leaves (pudina) - This is Optional
  • 1/4 table spoon mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves to your taste
  • Fresh,green coriander leaves and chopped spring onion for garnishing

Yields: Serve 3-4

How to cook Bread Upma:

  1. Grind in a Grinder - the tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chilies, corriander leaves and mint together to a thick paste
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds to it.
  3. Once they splutter add the curry leaves.
  4. Add the slidced onion and cook till they turn to golden color
  5. Add the red chili powder to it and cook for two minute.
  6. Add the ground tomatoe paste prepared in step 1 and cook till oil seperates.
  7. Add small amount of ketchup.

8. Add water, salt and bring the paste to a boil. Simmer till a thick gravy is formed
9. Add the bread pieces to the paste and mix well.
10. Once the bread is heated through, take it out in a ceramic plate and garnish with coriander leaves.
11. Add some lemon juice on the top to your taste.

Your Bread Upma is ready to serve.
