How to Make Irresistible Salmon Cakes With Avocado Dip

Updated on March 22, 2018

Ready to treat yourself?

A new life for canned salmon

I personally never really liked canned salmon, or any other canned fish for that matter, but fish is full of nutrients, so I strive to eat it on a regular basis. Canned fish is noticeably cheaper than something frozen or fresh, but the taste definitely is not superior, at least for me.

'What if I make patties out of canned salmon?!', I thought to myself one day, after spending a fortune on organic salmon patties at a local farmer's market, 'They can't taste too different, can they?'

The idea for the avocado dip came after a few failed attempts at making guacamole.

So there you have it, the back story of this recipe. Now, let's get to the good stuff, shall we?

Here is the, revised and tested numerous times, recipe for salmon cakes with avocado dip, a truly mouth-watering dish!

Cook Time

Prep time: 35 min
Cook time: 15 min
Ready in: 50 min
Yields: around 12 salmon cakes and 1 cup of dip

Ingredients — Salmon Cakes

  • 400 grams salmon, canned
  • 2 tbsp flour, wholewheat/white
  • 1 quarter onion, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • as desired salt and pepper
  • as desired green onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp oats, (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic, powder
  • as desired other spices
  • 100 grams peas and or carrots, canned or frozen
  • 1 avocado, mashed
  • 1-2 parts garlic, chopped
  • pinch salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1.5 tbsp plain (Greek) yogurt
  • 1.5 slice bread, any, could be stale

  1. First, we'll make the salmon cakes. Separate the bones from the fish and place into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Chop both types of onions, break the bread into small pieces and drain the peas/carrots.
  3. Add all ingredients, except the avocado, garlic, lemon juice and yogurt, to a bowl and mix well, until somewhat blended. Mix with a spoon or use your hands.
  4. Put some flour or bread crumbs on a flat surface. For circular patties out of the mixture. Roll in the flour (bread crumbs), then flatten. Repeat until you've used up all the mixture.
  5. Heat up a frying pan on medium heat. Add some oil or butter so that the patties don't stick. Fry, flipping every 2-3 minutes. Cook each patty for a total of around 7 minutes. Place on a plate when done and set aside.
  6. Time to make the avocado dip! Peel and chop the garlic. (Or use a garlic press, much more efficient this way).
  7. Add all the ingredients for the dip (avocado, garlic, salt, pepper, lemon juice, yogurt) into a bowl and mix well, mashing up the avocado in the process.
  8. And you're done! Put a spoonful of dip on a plate, break of a piece of the salmon cake and devour! Best served on rice.
