Free Smells at Jimmy Johns

Updated on April 30, 2012

Jimmy, Jimmy He's Our Man!

Oh, the heaven! Oh, the wonderfulness! This party that was in my mouth! With each chew I was closer to Nirvana. I swallowed, I had just eaten my first bite of a Jimmy Johns sub sandwich. It was what Jimmy's calls a Turkey Tom. A turkey sandwich with turkey, mayo, provolone, and alfalfa sprouts. It was Tasty, after that first bite I automatically became a fan. Now not only a fan of the food mind you, but of the whole place. The atmosphere of the shop is so fun and laid back. They have cool signs and decorations. The best one they have, in my opinion is the neon that every store has in the window the states "FREE SMELLS". Now I think that is great, but besides free smells what is so special about Jimmy's...

Jimmy's Story

It started in 1983, a guy named Jimmy John Liautaud who had just graduated the year before from Elgin Academy was looking for something to do with himself, when his father gave him a choice of going to college, joining the army, or starting a business. So, Jimmy decided to open a business with a loan his father gave him. At first he started a hot dog shop, but upon learning that it would cost more than he thought he decided on opening a sandwich joint.

The first store opened out of a garage in Charleston, Illinois on Jan. 13, 1983. Jimmy had to use used equipment, no menu (because he only had four sandwich choices) and sold warm cokes. The business began to thrive after Jimmy handed out samples and people found out he delivered. In 1985 he bought out his fathers stake of the company He, the sole owner, opened a second store in Macomb, Illinois. He began to franchise in 1993, and in 2007 sold 33% of his stake to Weston Presidio a private equity firm, but retain 67% of the company. Jimmy johns currently has over 1200 stores open and continues to open more all the time.

What He Does For Me

Jimmy Johns has a long list of delicious sandwiches that I love. I guess I love them simply because it is the fresh ingredients they maintain. They make all their own bread every day, slice their own meat everyday, and have fresh toppings; yep you guessed it, every day. They serve 8” sandwiches and also what they call giant subs which are still 8” but they have a lot more toppings and meat on them. They have also expanded from their warm coke drink selection and offer many more drinks selections. As well as having sub sandwiches they have wraps and cookies. Jimmy’s is also the fastest delivery place I have ever come across, sometimes it is like in the old cartoons where the character no sooner gets off the phone and his sandwich is there for him to enjoy.

This Is Not A Review

As it says in the title, this is not a review. Jimmy did not pay me to say this and has no affiliation with this work. This is simply a history of Jimmy's and a documentation of my perverted intense love affair with the awesomeness of the food that the restaurant provides its costumers! I hope that one day you, will see that "free smells" neon beckoning and you decide to dip in and have a taste for yourself.

Never heard of Jimmy John's until just now, and I am pleased to say that there are several of their shops not too far from me, although well outside my usual "haunting grounds."

      I love a success story!

That sucks! Jimmy's is a lot better than Subway. If you ever get on this side of the puddle be sure to go eat at Larry's Giant Subs, and Firehouse Subs as well. They are great!

Way to go Jimmy John! He was a man on a mission and succeeded. The name souds familiar, might be because Facebook friends mention it on their status. Excellent hub, I'm sure Jimmy would appreciate it even though it's not a review:)
