Kids Birthday Party Food - Recipes for Little Fingers
Planning a Kids Party?
Alright, so you have a small army of little ones coming to the house for a birthday party, and you need to pull together some party food ideas. Kids are picky, it's so easy to order pizza and be done with it, but how impressed will the kids and parents be when you put together some easy to make party platters that are delicious and healthy? Very. I know I would be. So read on if you're looking for some great recipes specially designed for little fingers!
Finger Foods - Appetizers
When you think of appetizers, you think about foods that are fried, or packed with fat and sugar, and have no real nutritional value. Kids love them though, and who doesn't? It's a party after all. However, as a mom, I'd like to see the kids eating something that also has some nutrients. So, I have pulled together some great recipes that still have that "treat" aspect of a party appetizer, but are much healthier.
Fruit with Chocolate Pudding Dip
- 20-30 Strawberries, cut in half lengthwise
- 3-4 Bananas, sliced
- 1 pkg of Jello Pudding (fat free, or no sugar added, if you prefer)
I like to use strawberries and bananas because most kids love them, but feel free to mix it up with whatever fruit you like. Prepare the Jello pudding and serve as a dip. This is a great recipe because your kids will get all the nutrients of the fruit, and the fun of dipping it in chocolate. The pudding is a smart alternative to conventional chocolate dip, as it contains a fraction of the fat, sugar, and calories.
Thinking about serving cookies or potato chips? Try this recipe out, it's still a treat, but much healthier.
- 3 cups of mini marshmallows
- 3 tbsp of butter or margarine
- 8 cups of natural popped popcorn
- 5 drops of any colour food colouring (optional)
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter or margarine over medium-low heat. Add the marshmallows, and stir continuously until melted together. Add the food coloring to the marshmallow mix if you are using it. Put popcorn in a large slightly greased mixing bowl, and pour the marshmallow mix over the popcorn. Stir until well mixed, let cool for a few minutes. Lightly grease you hands with vegetable shortening or butter, and grab about 1/3 a cup of the popcorn mixture and roll into a ball. Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Repeat until all the popcorn is used up. Your kids will love this special treat and they can help with rolling the mix into balls with you.

Mix all the above ingredients together. Spread the cream cheese mix on one side of the tortilla wrap. Roll the tortilla wrap and slice into 1" sections. Place on a platter and serve. Super easy and delicious.

Pigs in a Blanket From Scratch
This recipe is great, and popular with all kids. There are plenty of recipes out there using a frozen can of dough, but I prefer to make the dough from scratch as it is a much healthier, and doesn't contain as much fat and calories. Plus I like to sneak in some whole wheat flour for extra nutrition.
- 3 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole wheat flour
- 3 tbsp of baking powder
- 2 tbsp of sugar
- 1 and a half tsp of salt
- 1/2 cup of butter or margarine
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 pkgs of all beef hot dogs
Preheat oven to 450°. In a mixing bowl, combine flours, baking powder, sugar and salt. Mix well. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk slowly. Flour a flat surface and start kneading dough. Knead dough gently, maybe 10-12 times. Cut dough in half. Using a rolling pin, roll half of the dough out to about 1/4" thickness. Slice the dough like a pizza, making eight even slices. Roll each slice around a hot dog. Repeat with second half of the dough. Place hot dogs directly on non stick baking sheet and bake for 12-15 min or until golden brown. Let cool slightly and serve with mustard and ketchup for dipping, your kids will love them!
Having a party is always fun, and the kids really do look forward to the food because it's a special day. These recipes are a good way to cut fat, sugar, and calories while also incorporating nutrition into the party without losing that "treat" feeling. Your kids will love it and you'll feel better about what your serving.
