How to Make Easy Breakfast Blueberry Oatmeal Recipe ...Like Tim Horton's!
My Most, Satisfying Breakfast of All Time!
I have been making this best oatmeal breakfast for decades. It takes 5 minutes or less to make and it never loses it's appeal, because it is never boring!
I am one for simple recipes made fast, it is just me, I have other things I want to do, like write Hubs and so on...so time and time again I will opt for what is simple, healthy, satisfying and importantly fast! Slow and involved recipes are for Christmas and special occasions...those are times I just set aside to enjoy the cooking process.
Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day...just look anywhere and the evidence is there, I won't repeat it!
There are, of course, store bought breakfasts that are faster...and I often wonder, why would anyone buy the instant package when the real thing is sooo much better and really worth the small insignificant effort this takes. The 5 minutes isn't actual work...the 5 minutes is "cook time"! You can be dressing in the meantime! Simple? I think so. Satisfying and good? Yup!
My defense for this delicious breakfast is: Why would Tim Hortons make this an item if it wasn't simply a good breakfast? (for non-Canadians- please check the video below for an explanation of Tim Horton's)
I will give you step-by-step instructions in the next capsule on how to make your own, just in case you can't make it to Timmies 'cause you are in your jammies!
The Simple, Deeelicious recipe:
Now I hope you like Oatmeal, because that is the recipe and while it seems oatmeal is just oatmeal... it takes just a few minutes to realize that oatmeal is like pasta!
Oatmeal can be dressed up to suit your preference! There you go! Now just think creatively and you will always love oatmeal!
This recipe calls for Quaker Oats, Quick which cooks in 3 to 5 minutes...not the instant! I buy it in the 1kg package. I will post pictures later...because I ate my oatmeal before I could take a picture!
Now for the details!
One serving is 130 calories (without the trimmings) the fruit and nuts add extra calories, but they are worth it. This is the recipe for one serving... double quanities for two servings:
Canadian Blueberry Cinnamon-Nut Oatmeal
- 1/4 cup frozen or fresh ( the frozen will melt in the hot oatmeal and cool the porridge for those in a hurry...bonus! blueberries
- 1/4 cup dried sweetened cranberries (any fruit will do...even raisins if you like them! Chop up bigger chunks)
- 1/4 cup plain (vanilla is better) low fat yogurt
- 1/2 cup slim milk or more to taste
- 1/3 cup of coarsely chopped almonds, cashews or walnuts
- Canadian maple syrup (or your favorite syrup)
- 1/3 cup of oatmeal (Quaker oats 100% whole grain..cooks in 3 to 5 minute)
- 2/3 cup water
- 1 tsp salted butter (if you want to splurge on calories and fat)
- brown sugar and cinnamon (optional)
Bring water to a boil,
add the butter (if using),
add the oatmeal
bring back to a boil
lower heat and cook stirring occasionally for 3 to 5 minutes ( cooking longer thickens the oatmeal, so adding a touch of liquid and cooking longer just improves the texture...so overcooking isn't much of a problem)
You now can go about getting ready...Keep HOT until ready to eat!
Here is where the oatmeal becomes sensational...
- add yogurt, milk, nuts and cranberries....stir until blended..do not let it cool down!
- quickly add the frozen blueberries or fresh..(.if frozen let the berries soak up the heat just a short bit...making sure they are imbedded in the hot oatmeal)... spread blueberries ...do not mix or purple porridge will happen!
- Sprinkle with brown sugar and a slight hint of cinnamon (optional)
- Drizzle with syrup to your intense enjoyment!

Add Cottage Cheese...
One morning, I didn't have yogurt and looked around for something "good" to add to the oatmeal I had prepared. I had low fat, cottage cheese which I added it to my usual portion instead of yogurt and it was still good. Ricotta and all similar cheeses would be equally good and filling as well.
Dried Mangos and Feta??
Another morning I didn't feel like fussing so I just added dried cranberries and small chunks of dried mango and dry feta cheese to the mix topped with brown sugar. New age porridge! Maybe not for everyone...but I liked it!
Then again, I will eat left over pizza for breakfast! LOL!
