Magic Bullet - Great Smoothies!
“As seen on TV!” These words always made me a little skeptical of the product being sold, as the commercials seem too good to be true. But two years ago, as my daughter was headed for college, she asked if she could have a Magic Bullet for her dorm room to make smoothies. Being health conscious and thin, she was worried about ‘the freshman 15”. So, off we went to Bed, Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon. This blender/mixer is made by Homeland Housewares, and we got the 17 piece set. Fast forward two years, and she is doing this semester abroad, so I inherited the Bullet. The final verdict – I love it!
It is great for making smoothies, she was right about that. All year, I freeze strawberries, blueberries, grapes, cherries and peaches. Why? Because anytime I buy them fresh, everyone enjoys them, but as soon as they get the tiniest bit soft, they sit in the refrigerator. I take these still good but very ripe pieces and put them in the freezer on a cookie tray, single layer. As soon as they freeze, I transfer them to a sealed container and put them back into the freezer. A word of caution- the frozen fruit needs to thaw for about 15 – 20 minutes to blend easily.
What are the seventeen pieces? This set comes with the power base, a short and tall mixing cup, 2 different blades, 4 mugs with lids, comfort lip rings and shaker/steamer tops. All are very serviceable, although I do not use the mugs- I like to drink smoothies in glassware. According to the user guide, the party mugs are great for frozen party drinks because you can make and serve in the same cup, adding a colored comfort ring to cover the threads and work like a wine glass charm – keeping straight whose drink is whose. I guess I will have to expand my horizons.
The kit comes with a recipe book for 10 second recipes which are easy and quite tasty. Some recipes include Seven-second Salsa, Fat-Free Hummus, Speedy Guacamole, Easy Strawberry Margarita, and many more. The steamer top works well for heating a dip in the microwave after chopping and mixing the ingredients. The shaker top is handy for freshly grated parmesan cheese

Why the two blades? The cross blade has the most applications, as it can chop vegetables, blend smoothies and drinks,, puree anything soft, grate cheese and chocolate, shave ice and grind meats. The flat blade is great for whipping cream, and grinding hard objects like coffee beans and spices.
There are also recipes for baked good mixes like muffins and pancakes, soups and sauces, mousses and sorbets. I definitely need to expand my horizons!!!
