Mango's Are One Of The Most Delicious Tropical Fruits

Mango's are a tropical fruit of the Mango Tree. The fruit is oblong in shape and a little larger than a pear in size. It is green in color, turning orange-yellow when ripe, and it has a delicious, pleasantly acid pulp. The mango tree was originally from the East Indian area. It is cultivated in the East Indies, China, Malaysia, The Philippines, India, Thailand, and in California, Texas, and Florida in the United States.

The Mango has been cultivated for centuries in Southeast Asia and Mango's are closely connected with the religion and folklore of the East. The mango tree is considered sacred in India where mango's are a staple of Indian food, and a basic ingredient of chutney. Wealthy Indian gardeners often collect mango trees, and some gardens have hundreds of varieties.

Portuguese traders first carried the mango to Africa from the far east. From there it was introduced into South America and from there it found it's way into the Caribbean nations. By the early 19th century the mango had arrived in Mexico and in 1833 a Florida horticulturalist planted the first mango trees south of Miami. They were lost after his death, and mango's were reintroduced to Florida around 1858 just before the American Civil War.

Mango's are eaten fresh, but may be made into jams or jellies, or into desserts such as ice cream or the new hit smoothies. If you click that link you'll find wonderful recipes for smoothies made with mango. Green mango's are used in making chutney and pickles.

Availability And Purchasing Guide.

Mango's are in season from May through September. They vary in size from a few ounces to three to four pounds. Mango's are also available canned, and as nectar. Mango chutney is also available. The flesh of a ripe mango gives slightly when pressed with the finger. As time goes by the skin turns to orange-yellow.

Storage Of Mango's

Wrap your mango's in wax paper and refrigerate. You can refrigerate them raw or cooked for up to one week.

You can prepare the mango by peeling it and cutting the flesh out from around the seed and then freeze the cut up mango flesh for up to a year.

Food Value

Mango's are rich in vitamins C, D, and A all of which are powerful antioxidants. There are about 66 calories in a cup of mango.

Mango Ice Cream

To each quart of softened vanilla ice cream add two cups of fine pureed mango pulp. Mix it up very well together and then freeze hard together again.

Mango Chutney

1. Four Pounds Mature Green Mango's.

2. One Large Onion Diced Large.

3. Eight Ounces Green Ginger Root Peeled And Diced.

4. Three Pounds Brown Sugar.

5. Two Ounces Green Chilies With Seeds And Stems Removed.

6. Two Tablespoons Minced Fresh Garlic.

7. Two Pounds Raisins.

8. Two Cups White Vinegar.

Run the first three ingredients through the food processor. Add the remainder of the ingredients and have all the ingredients in a large plastic container with lid that will fit in the refrigerator. Put the container in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day bring to a boil and boil rapidly until thick which should take about forty five minutes. Have pint jars, rings, and lids ready that you have boiled and sterilized when you get the chutney ready. Some people like to leave the chutney chunkier. That's up to you. But your jars, rings, and lids must be hot. Fill the jars with the chutney and put the lids and rings on. You should hear the jar pop when it seals. If it does not seal you'll have to put those jars or jar in the refrigerator and use with in a month.

If you make homemade curry dishes you'll find that the mango chutney will taste wonderful with your curry dishes. Cooks in India often make homemade mango chutney and enjoy it with many of their traditional homemade curry dishes.

Corn And Mango Relish

Relish is all about eating something fresh from the garden. This relish is delicious with grilled steaks or grilled chicken. It's truly one of the most delicious things I've ever had.

You'll need two ripe mango's to make this relish. The first thing you want to do is peel the mango's and cut them loose from the big seed that's inside them. Cut your mango up into small bite size pieces.

Then you'll want to peel the shucks off eight years of corn and also remove the silks. Be sure to use a kitchen brush and get all the silks off the corn. Now rub that corn down with butter and grill it turning it often to grill it done. It's okay if you get a few almost burnt spots. It will add to the flavor. Let your corn cool and then cut the corn off the cob over a large bowl so you'll catch the juice to.Mix your cut off corn, corn juice, and the mango together in the large bowl. To those ingredients add the below ingredients.

1. One Purple Or Red Sweet Onion Diced Fine.

2. One Green Bell Pepper Diced Fine.

3. One Red Bell Pepper Diced Fine.

4. One Tablespoon Red Pepper Flakes.

5. One Tablespoon Mustard Seeds.

6. One Tablespoon Celery Seed.

8. One Fourth Cup Apple Cider Vinegar.

9. One Fourth Cup Apple Cider.

Put all your ingredients into the container after mixing very well and put the lid on. Try to leave in the refrigerator for a full three days before you use. After those three days you'll want to use it up in a week. It's a delicious relish with grilled steaks or grilled chicken. In fact one of the best you'll ever taste.

Some Of The Best Mango Bread In The World
Some Of The Best Mango Bread In The World

Recipe For Some Of The Best Mango Bread In The World

No one makes better Mango Bread than I do. I started making Mango Bread in the early 1980s in Key West and I've been making it ever since. Everyone that has ever tasted my Mango Bread says that it's the best Mango Bread that they have ever tasted. So what are you waiting on. Lets get busy making the best mango bread in the world.

Ingredients For Your Mango Bread

1.Three Fourths Cup Of Real Butter.

2. One Cup White Granulated Sugar.

3. Four Large Eggs.

4. One Cup Of Mango Pulp.

5. Two Cups Self Rising Flour.

6. One Half Cup Of Sour Cream.

7. One Half Cup Fine Chopped Dried Mango.

You should be able to find the dried mango in most large supermarkets. If not and you have a food dehydrator make your own by drying mango you have dipped in lemon juice in your food dehydrator until the mango is very dry and then dice up a half a cup for your mango bread recipe.

Spray a loaf pan with vegetable cooking spray to prepare it for your mango bread to cook.

Beat your butter and sugar in a bowl with you electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat your eggs in one at a time. Stir in the remainder of your ingredients and be sure that they get mixed in very well. Pour your mixture into the greased loaf pan and shake it down.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven until brown and a knife inserted in the center of the loaf pan comes out clean. The dried mango is what makes this delicious homemade mango bread so good. I just checked and here in North Carolina Ingle's and Wal-Mart both have dried mango.

When you watch this bread carefully and get it out of the oven when just brown and done you won't find a better mango bread anywhere. I have had many people tell me that it's the best mango bread in the world. I bake several thousand loaves of the mango bread every year. And I have people call me on the phone and beg me to mail it to them.

I personally don't think anyone makes better mango bread than I do and if you follow the recipe carefully you can make the same delicious homemade mango bread.

The best time to use them is when they just give a little when you push on them about mid way down the fruit. If it gives a lot they are gone. I have three huge trees of them in my back yard in Key West.

May I ask a question about mangos? I always wait until they are either too ripe to cut and end up with mush, or too green still and hard. When and how is the right time to cut them properly?
