Mediterranean Mashed Potatoes with garlic and oregano

This is a Mediterranean mashed potatoes recipe which is absolutely divine.

It could be served with or without gravy, cold or warm as a side dish.

Of course, your herb measurements’ could be higher or lower depending on your liking.

  • ½ kg salad potatoes
  • 100ml double light cream, try using Elmlea, an alternative to cream
  • 50ml hot water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon crushed oregano leaves, dry
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt or garlic powder, you could also use fresh garlic
  • 1 table spoon butter

  1. Peal your potatoes
  2. Then cut each potato in four pieces (you could leave them whole, but I just find cutting them up help to both in cooking them quicker and mashing them up with ease)
  3. Now place them into a pot (saucepan) and ad water
  4. Boil them for approximately 20-25 minutes (gas mark: 4). The potatoes are ready when they become really soft – which means that when inserting a fork into it, the potato should fall right off
  5. When ready, use a strainer to drain the water from the potatoes
  6. Now place your potatoes in a bowl and add your butter and spices
  7. Using a potato masher of a fork, mash up your potatoes with the butter and spices
  8. Next add in the cream and hot water. Continue to mix all ingredients together until a smooth mixture is formed
  9. Place into a serving plate or bowl and sprinkle a pinch of oregano on top
  10. Ready to serve. Enjoy!

      Oh my goodness!! I made these last night (with a few minor adnustmejts due to lack of ingredients) and they were absolutely delicious!! I was surpised as I would not have thought anything other than brown sugar and cinnamon would have worked on sweet potatoes. I did not have any cumin or chipotle chili powder so I left those out all toghether, and I did not have any garlic so just used garlic powder. Also, due to laziness, I only seasoned one side of the smashe potatoes. They were so good, I cannot even describe it. The way the potatoes crisp up and the sugar carmelizes the spice mixture yum! This should seriously be a recipe in a fancy steakhouse. I will definitely make this again and again and again. Thank you for sharing!!!

      Chris, Mashed potatoes are one of my all-time favorite foods, and white pepper is one of my all-time favorite seasonings. I never tire of mashed potatoes, never ever. I also love to add Greek oregano to mashed potatoes; it imparts a distinctively wonderful flavor and texture.       There is NOTHING as good as a dish of well-crafted mashed taters--and you have these down to an art! Pureeing is key, and my goodness! That is a big ole mixer you have access to! I hit lots of bells and whistles for these fully frilled spuds. :)
