Michigan Chocolate Fondue Restaurants

Updated on October 27, 2011

Fondue originated in Switzerland, where cheese was melted and mixed with wine and seasonings in a pot, then diners gathered around with bits of bread speared on long forks, dipped the bread into the gooey brew and ate it. Chocolate fondue is a newer addition to fondue cuisine, and gained popularity in the 20th century. If you are in Michigan and crave chocolate fondue, there are several restaurants that serve it.

East Michigan - The Melting Pot

The Melting Pot (meltingpot.com) is a popular fondue restaurant chain with locations in Ann Arbor, Troy, Novi and Grand Rapids. Their chocolate fondue is a decadent experience, with a variety of dippers and chocolate mixtures to try. Restaurant guests can dip fresh fruits like bananas and strawberries or baked goods like cheese cake, pound cake, brownies and Rice Krispies treats. The Melting Pot offers chocolate fondue creations like milk chocolate and crunchy peanut butter, dark and white chocolate, dark chocolate with marshmallow cream and Oreo cookie bits, milk chocolate with caramel and candied pecans, white chocolate with bananas and cinnamon, and milk chocolate with marshmallow cream and graham crackers. In addition to chocolate fondue, The Melting Pot serves cheese fondues like spinach artichoke or Wisconsin trio and entrees of meat, chicken or seafood.

Southwest Michigan - Chocolate Café

If you’re in the southwest Michigan lakeshore community of South Haven, head to the Chocolate Café (sbchocolatecafe.com) for delicious chocolate fondue. In addition to fondue, the Chocolate Café serves soup, salad, sandwiches, coffee, hot chocolate and a variety of sweets, like chocolates, baked goods, cheesecake and ice cream. The Chocolate Café also has locations in Saint Joseph and New Buffalo.

Central Michigan - Dusty’s Wine Bar

At Dusty’s Wine Bar (dustyscellar.com) in Okemos you can dine on entrees like sautéed veal cutlet with porcini cream or maple glazed quail, coupled with a selection from Dusty’s extensive wine list. Afterwards, enjoy a tasty chocolate fondue with bananas, strawberries and cake for dipping.

Northern Michigan - Boyne Highlands

For a romantic dinner topped off with a chocolate fondue dessert, reserve a spot at one of Boyne Highlands’ (boyne.com) Aonach Mor Moonlight Dinners. From December to March the popular northern Michigan ski resort hosts this dinner at North Peak, a day lodge perched atop the slopes. Guests meet at the main lodge and board sleighs that carry them to North Peak, where they’ll dine on soup, vegetables and roast tenderloin while a live guitarist plays in the background. The meal is finished off with fruit and cookies for dipping in the chocolate fondue.
