Quick Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Updated on November 26, 2017

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Many times I like to just have a grilled cheese sandwich. These are quick and easy. I have heard that you can also use mayonnaise for the coating on the outside, since mayonnaise has eggs and they fry nicely to a browned crunchy coating.

I, however, just coat mine with butter, spreading a goodly amount across the outside of the sandwich and frying them until they are very dark tan. The butter caramelizes into the bread and the flavor is amazing. Sometimes, I sprinkle garlic powder on the last side that I flip, for that added bit of flavor.

Some people like the additional garlic, some do not. This sandwich is good dipped in a hot, tomato soup, as well.

Nesper Stumbleduck. Well, I had to go butter a piece of bread and put some mayonnaise on a piece of bread and fry it to see what the difference was. My preference, at this moment, would be to use butter. The mayonnaise was okay, but it's got egg in it and the egg cooks up like a fried egg on the outside of your sandwich. Almost like french toast. It took about 6 minutes to fry it to the point where there was browning. Now, if you had a second piece of bread on the top, that would mean that it would take an additional 6 minutes to fry the other side of your sandwich. I guess, it's a personal choice. If you have mayonnaise and no butter, I'd be confident that it would turn out fairly similar with the mayonnaise, but, since I have butter, I prefer the salty, buttery flavor. So, yes. I now have experience with this. Thank you.

Looks good! I hear that some people use mayo instead of butter. Do you have any experience with this?
