Must try foods in Netherlands

Updated on November 15, 2011

Like any other country, Netherlands also boasts of its must try foods. This includes poffertjes, erwtensoep, and pannenkoek.

Poffertjes: mini pancakes
Poffertjes: mini pancakes

· Poffertjes is a Dutch treat that resembles mini puffy pancakes that are light and spongy in texture. They are made using a poffertjesplaat, a pan specifically for poffertjes. Usually they are served hot as a snack or dessert with powdered sugar and butter spread on it. They can also be served with added syrups or creams.

Erwtensoep: Dutch pea soup

· Erwtensoep, also known as snert, is a Dutch pea soup. It is typically made of stewed green peas garnished with but not limited to pork, celery, onion, potato and carrots. It resembles a very filling meal or snack that is usually consumed during winter. Though many recipes have already been tweaked to satisfy taste, here is a recipe that you’ll surely love. I found it on the Insego website on the page with typical Dutch food

Pannekoek: Dutch pancake
Pannekoek: Dutch pancake

· Pannekoek is a Dutch pancake. Compared to ordinary pancakes and poffertjes, pannekoek are larger, and thinner. However, it is not just your usual pancake for it resembles a pizza. Though it may be eaten plain with added syrup, sugar or butter, some are incorporated with bits of bacon, cheese, ham, or vegetables. They are served with different toppings in many pannenkoekenhuizen (pancake house)in Netherlands.

Wow ... you know I felt really full after lunch ... until I read these. Some great suggestions! The pancake with "bits of bacon, cheese, ham, [AND] vegetables" sounds great.
