My Family's Favorite Taco Salad

Updated on April 6, 2009

The Worlds Best Taco Salad

My mom makes the best taco salad ever! She says she has been making it for 30 years. It makes a great thing to bring to family gatherings or potlucks, because it serves a lot of people and is delicious!

What you'll need:

- 1 Head of Iceberg lettuce, washed and chopped

- 1 Large OR 2 Small tomatoes, diced

- 1 Can of Ranch Beans, chilled and drained

- 1 Package of grated cheddar cheese

- 1 Small bottle of Catalina dressing, chilled

- 1 Pound of hamburger meat

- 1 Pouch of taco seasoning

- 1 Bag of original Fritos

How you Make It:

1. Prepare hamburger meat with taco seasoning, set aside.

2. Toss lettuce, tomatoes, beans, and cheese in a LARGE bowl.

3. Pour dressing over the salad and toss it again

4. Put a few Fritos in a bowl and top with a serving of salad

5. Finish with the warm taco meat on top of the salad

6. Add extra chips and/or cheese to the top if you want

Do not pour the dressing on the salad until you are ready to serve it (the lettuce will get soggy).

I really like this because it hot, cold, and crunchy all at the same time. You should definitely try it one night for dinner!

We put Fritos in the bottom of the bowl. I usually add some on top too though. Everything is mixed together except for the chips and meat. The meat goes on top of the salad when its hot (goes great with the cold lettuce).

      Thanks for the comment!

Sorry I might have misread, but do you put the chips in with the salad? My mom makes it pretty good as well, but we get the round chips (tostitos) and just scoop into the taco salad.

The ingredients and layout is a bit different too. A layer of hamburger is at the bottom, and then a layer of shredded lettuce, diced tomato, salsa, and sour cream. Finally, cheddar cheese is grated on top. It always tastes the best cold out of the refrigerator the next morning.

Being raised in California, I truly miss authentic Mexican; here in Montana it is hard to find.... I am always looking for recipes now that come close to the good food I grew up eating!!! I bookmarked your recipe, will have to give it a try this week. Thanks!!

Yum, I've had other taco salads with black olives and they were really good. Thanks.

Interesting and sounds alot like the recipe my mom has been making for years except we add Kidney beans and black olives, Thousand Island dressing and Tortilla Chips instead of Fritos...but the same general idea. nice!

I love taco salads. I've never made one myself but I've ordered quite a few in my lifetime. Great hub. Sounds yummie.
