New Hot Pepper, Naga Viper, Crowned World's Hottest Pepper

Naga Viper: One Hot Pepper!

The Naga Viper is a hybrid chilli pepper that has recently taken the top place in the chilli pepper world being crowned the World’s Hottest Pepper. This title has been confirmed by the Warwick University labs which are purported to be quite the experts on testing chilli peppers. The Guinness Book Of World’s Records will be making room for the Naga Viper on the pages of its next edition. It was all made official on December 3, 2010 when the Naga Viper was discovered to be hotter then the Naga Jolokia or Ghost Chili which held the top spot prior to December 3.

“Hot Enough To Peel Paint”

Web designer cum Chilli farmer, Gerald Fowler in the man responsible for creating this new power house of the chilli world. The Naga Viper is a seriously hot pepper that came into being in his green house in Cumbria, England. The hybrid of 3 of the world’s hottest peppers ( Naga Jolokia, Naga Morich and Trinidad Scorpian) is said to be able to strip paint. Interesting comment when you consider the Naga Viper is a food product and meant to be consumed by you and I.

Farmer Fowler told the Daily Mail that “ It numbs your tongue, then burns all the way down. It can last an hour, and you just don’t want to talk to anybody or do anything. But it is a marvellous endorphin rush. It makes you feel great.” I feel terrified and energized as I read Fowler's description and I begin to understand the Viper's allure.

The Scoville Rating

Exactly how does the Naga Viper gain the official title of the hottest pepper in the world? Professor Wilbur Scoville developed a method for measuring just this in 1912. The chemical responsible for the pungency of all pepper plants is capsaicin. The Scoville scale is a measurement of the amount of capsaicin present. The chemical capsaicin stimulates nerves receptors in the skin. The mucus membranes, such as those found in the mouth, nose and eyes, are especially sensitive. This nerve reaction produces the burning sensation we experience when eating a hot pepper or chilli sauce.

Past chilli champ, the Ghost chilli or Naga Jolokia scores 1,041,427 on the Scoville scale. This is 300,000 points less then the Naga Viper’s score of 1,359,000. Tabasco, for example, has a range of 2,500 - 5,000. The Scoville rating of each variety of pepper is given as a range. This is necessary due to the variation of capsaicin levels in each plant due to differences in the growing environment.

You may share my fascination with a food so hot it can actually strip paint but how likely are you to actually eat such a thing? This video chronicles a couple of, self proclaimed, idiot chilli lovers over a 15 minute time period after they have eaten the hottest pepper in the world. They give a thorough and dispassionate account of their physical reaction to eating the Naga Viper. A must see for anybody not planning to eat one themselves.       I agree yet I am strangely fascinated by this. I never sit through You Tube videos but I was glued to this one of the guys' reaction to eating this pepper. I could not imagine eating something that burned the inside of my ears!
