Pennsylvania Shoofly Pie

Updated on June 6, 2013

  • 1 (9 Inch) Pie Shell
  • 3/4 Cup Hot Water
  • 1 Cup Molasses
  • 3/4 Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 Egg, (Beaten)
  • 1 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 Cup Shortening

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Shoofly Pie has two layers; so for the bottom layer combine Molasses, Hot Water, and Baking Soda in a bowl and whisk in your beaten Egg. Pour mixture into your Pie Shell.
  2. For the crumb topping layer combine Flour and Brown Sugar and mix well cutting in the Shortening until it resembles crumbs and sprinkle over top the Molasses. Bake for 15 minutes then lower your temperature to 350 and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Enjoy my home state's favorite dessert!
