Ground Beef and Cabbage Stew
This hearty recipe is great for those cold days ahead. Simple to make and filling served with a slice of home made bread and butter.
Even the children will eat cabbage when it's done this way. What is even more fantastic is that you can prepare it in the morning and just let it simmer all day in the crock pot. If you make it on the stove you need to keep an eye on it and stir occasionally so that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot.
- 1-1/2 lbs. ground beef
- 4 celery stocks,chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 head cabbage, chopped
- 6 tomatos, chopped
- 1 can tomato paste
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 carrots, chopped
- dash of sugar / pepper
Cook beef, celery and onion in saucepan until meat is no longer pink.
Combine with the remaining ingredients in a tall pot and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for at least an hour until cabbage and carrots are tender.
Hints and Alternatives
For a heartier stew you can add some of your already prepared marinara sauce.
Although this is similar to our crock pot stuffed cabbage it is easier to make since you don't have to roll the ground beef into balls. It also eliminates having the precook the cabbage to get all those leaves off. The only difference is that there is no rice in this recipe but you could add some if you want the stuffed cabbage effect.
