Restaurant Review of Nanna Mexico in Cambridge
Lovers of Mexican food in Cambridge should head to Nanna Mexico
When you arrive at Nanna Mexico a line of friendly servers greets you headed by Mane the charismatic owner bringing the best dishes from his home country to the centre of Cambridge. Tacos, quesadillas, nachos, tortas and the house speciality big ass burritos are prepared before your eyes according to personal preference. A mouth-watering choice of fillings includes steak, chicken, chorizo and vegetarian options too. Add to this traditional toppings; guacamole, sour cream and salsa for an authentic Mexican feast.
Service is fast and friendly but you can take your time dining in the clean spacious seating area. There is a row of stools near the door for those in a hurry or you can enjoy a more leisurely meal at tables in the main room. Flags hang from the ceiling and the walls are decorated with Mexican artwork. If the weather’s good you can step out of the back door onto Parker’s Piece and dine al fresco.
Commitment to quality
Mane, the owner, grew up in Central Mexico and travelled all over the country. He knows exactly how his favourite dishes should taste. He recalls ordering chicken when he first opened his restaurant in Cambridge. He was asked what percentage he wanted. ‘I want chicken breast,’ he insisted rejecting meat bulked up with starch and water. It is this commitment to quality ingredients that has made the restaurant a firm favourite with locals since it opened in 2005. One regular liked it so much they recorded a song about it.
When we visited on a weeknight the place was busy. Many of the customers were students filling up on main courses that start at £3.99, outstanding value for Cambridge city centre. We shared an enormous burrito stuffed with rice, vegetables and guacamole along with a spicy mix of chicken and chorizo. It was a main meal itself, wrapped in a huge tortilla. We also had a plate of tacos with a variety of fillings including steak and chorizo with pineapple generously topped with salsa and guacamole. Also included was a side serving of jalapeños in case a bit more spice was required. All this was washed down with Mexican beer by me and sweet Mexican fruit drinks by my teetotal friend. I can’t wait to try other items such as quesadillas and nachos and if you are still hungry after your main course you can try a classic dessert with a Mexican kick, chilli chocolate brownies!
The restaurant has built links with the local community. A van serves the same food to local businesses at a few locations during the week. They have also partnered with Wintercomfort, a local charity working with the homeless to help them get them back on their feet. Mane taught a group of their catering students how to make burritos from scratch. More on this story and details of van locations each week can be found on the website.
Nanna Mexico combines the value and efficiency of fast food with the quality and comfort of a restaurant. Fine, tasty and authentic Mexican food is guaranteed.
