Shock Top - End of the World Midnight Wheat
Owned by Anheuser-Busch, Shock Top End of the World Midnight Wheat (6% alcohol) is a very good choice if you would like to enjoy something different yet widely available. It has very good thirst-quenching properties and is reasonably priced. On the other hand, if you have a developed palate, you may want to try something a little bolder.
I love the apocalyptic tones in the marketing for this beer. It is brilliant. The end of the world will come to all of us eventually, we might as well celebrate it before it gets here. Also, I sometimes like to have a beer at midnight, and this one makes for a pleasant surprise.
Instructions for pouring this beer are actually on the label. You should pour a little more than half, swirl the remainder, then finish pouring. As is typical of wheat beers, there may be some settling at the bottom. End of the World is a hazy, somewhat opaque, mahogany color. The head is quite manageable and lasted about 2-3 minutes. It does not pour flat or overflow. Drinking from a glass is recommended and a slice of orange would complement it well.
End of the World has a splendid scent. The malty wheat aroma is scattered with hints of toffee, vanilla, fruit, and caramel. The chili flavor was just a subtle teaser at this time.
Surprisingly, with all those flavors, End of the World is a "medium" bodied beer. It is quite light for a darker beer and rolls nicely to the back of the mouth. The flavors ignite taste buds everywhere. End of the World starts out with that roast chocolate malty flavor in the middle of the tongue, then as you move it back you get the hints of vanilla and citrus. When it hits the back of your throat, you can taste the chili. It is so subtle that it could be easily missed, but nevertheless is a very nice touch. One more drink - just to be sure that chili is there....
Overall, this beer is a 4.5. The beer itself was very well made and should appeal to many different consumers. Also, the creative label is a factor in the rating because it greatly influenced our decision to try it.
