I was lazy today and used a store-bought barbecue sauce. When picking a sauce always check the (carbohydrates) sugar, fat and salt. You can always whip up your own.

Turn your grill on to medium high. The tofu will grill up nicely in about 3-4 minutes per side.

Smokey sweet barbecued tofu

  • 1 block tofu, extra firm and drained
  • 1 tablespoon smoked sweet paprika
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot or cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder, granulated
  • 1/2 teaspoon chiplote chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons fresh chopped thyme, if using dry use 1 teaspoon
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup barbecue sauce, either store bought or homemade and gluten-free

  1. Drain the tub of tofu and slice it into 1/2 to 3/4 inch slices, then lay them onto a kitchen towel. Lay another towel on top and add some evenly distributed weight to help press out much of the water in the tofu. I used a book with a bowl on top for this purpose.
  2. While the tofu is draining, measure out your spices on a plate and stir together well. If you are going to be cooking the tofu right away, start your grill on medium heat.
  3. Take your drained tofu slices and place each one onto your spice plate, applying gentle pressure so each piece gets a nice coat of spices. Set the tofu aside while you prepare the grill pan.
  4. You can either put aluminum foil poked with holes directly onto your grill or, prepare a grill pan as seen in the photos. You simply cover the pan with the foil, poke holes in it, and then give it a light spray of cooking oil.
  5. Now take the seasoned tofu and lay your slices on grill pan. If you are a dish saving person, you could have skipped the previous pan and layed them straight on the prepared grill tray. You will now baste each side of the tofu with the a few tablespoons of barbecue sauce and place the whole thing on the grill.
  6. Grill each side for 3 to 4 minutes just to ensure the tofu is hot and the sauce is browning bringing out the sugars. Serve hot.

Sweet and smokey grilled tofu

I just love tofu for so many reasons. It's a great source of protein with no heart clogging saturated fat, you can store it in your refrigerator for months, and it's a blank palate for adding taste. Tofu can take on any flavor you give it from savory to sweet (check out my chocolate tofu pie blog).

You may notice in my spice mix that I don't add any salt. If you are using store-bought barbecue sauce, it will add plenty of salt. Gotta watch that sodium intake!

I served this dish with nutty brown rice and roasted asparagus. Did you know that asparagus has 253mcg of folic acid? Enjoy!

You can broil it in the oven or on a portable indoor grill!

This sounds delicious! I am always on the lookout for new veggie recipes, and I must bookmark this to try next grilling season. Or, maybe I can grill it under the broiler in the oven???
